Casting/ Audition question.Hi there! I am just starting to research this show because I am debating auditioning for it. I have listened to clips and have the sound track on order...but I was having difficulty finding descriptions of the roles--though I think I know now which ones are what racially. I am thinking of aiming for " Mother"...does anyone know if it is okay if she be on the plump side? I was sick and steroids made me bloat up, and though I am working to get it off am nervous about auditioning in a way I have not been before because of it...just self-conscious.
I also was thinking of singing " Can't Help Lovin' that Man of Mine" from Show Boat. It is one I have used in the past when auditioning for both soprano and mezzo roles since it shows both vocally. Think this will work? I guess I need to wait until amazon sends me the cd to know for sure, lol.

First of all, a great show, so yes, audition.
Second, size doesn't really matter. Mother should look well...motherly. I'm playing Mother right now and I'm no skinny-minny, but that's not saying someone smaller or whatever couldn't play the part. The actress just shouldn't look really young or immature since Mother is an older woman.
In the beginning of the show, Mother is the typical turn-of-the-century wife, doing whatever Father says. But after he leaves to go to the North Pole, Mother has some experiences (i.e. Sarah and the baby) that make her reconsider her role in her marriage and her role in society. She becomes a thinking independant woman through the course of the show.
Mother's songs are usually mezzo/soprano range, so something that showcases lots of emotion and strength in those ranges is probably good.

Mother can be any size, although if your company rents costumes, they might be restrained by the size of the rental costume (turn of the century costuming is not very forgiving, even with generous seam allowances). It's an amazing role, both vocally and in terms of acting. Go for it.
