Cast Recording

I was wondering if you think that the OLC recording is a good choice?
I currently just have the OBC recording.

Well I find the OBC and the OLC to be very close to each other, except for the Misto and Mungo and Rumpel numbers. The Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer number is the slower paced version of the video and the Misto number has the cast cheering Mistoffelees on. If you can get an OLC cheap or for a gift I would take it.

I only have the OLC out of English recordings other than my ripped video CD Wink (I also have 2 hometaped German ones) but I don't like it much, the OLC cast were really more picked for their dancing rather than singing and IMO it mostly shows Wink Rumpelteazer well...odd voice, she's unique anyway!! And there are only so many times you can hear Elaine Paige sing Memory, and I have her on 3 concert videos as well as video cast and OLC cast CDs.

However it is interesting to hear how CATS music & lyrics has evolved by listening to the OLC. A city library will most likely have it.

What else are you choosing out of? I have most of the CATS cast CDs and where you can get them listed on this page:

I'm also considering the Australian version.
Swan

Uhm... if I had to choose between OLC and Australian recording, I'd go for the Australian one. It's more complete.

.....On the OLCR? That is Bonnie Langford, she's an amazing singer. And she doesn't have a strange voice Wink....

Your forgetting London had Ballad Of Billy Mccaw instead of the italian aria

Also the Australian Recording is hard to find. I've been looking for six months and just picked it up three weeks ago on ebay.

Footlight has the Australian recording.

I've never been fond of the OLCR. I only have it because of Sarah Brightman, and it's nice to have in my very small "CATS" collection.

I found my Aussie recording at Borders, of all places, for $25. So it's around. Amazon.com sometimes has it, too.

Out of all of the English albums, it's the most complete. I really wish they'd go through and record the UK tour live, so we can get the full show as it's performed now w/out the terrible Troika cuts.

I agree with enkeli-kitten about seeing how the show has evolved from the original production - makes me really curious to see what it was like although I'm not a huge fan of the OLC costumes...

Where do you live, mistocopat? You can also try www.dresscircle.co.uk and if it's not listed they're usually good at ordering stuff. But if you're not from the UK try other places first because £s can be a bit much with the exchange rates.

But yeah, I prefer the Aussie recording for the vocals and such but I also collect these Cats recordings so I think the OLC is a good one to have. If you don't get it now, it's a good one to get eventually because you have these cut out lyrics from Old D, GT's Last Stand.... Smile

Both recordings are avalable to me at Borders. I think I might be getting the OLC for Christmas, so I'll start saving for the Australian recording.
Thanks for all the advice! Mr. Green

Isn't the OLC extremely fast-paced? I think I remember hearing that the actors could hardly get a breath in edge-wise! I only own the OBC, and an amazing recording of the Video, so I don't think I need the OLC. However, if everyone gives it rave reviews, I might have to spring for it. Wink

Awwwww c'mon, she's always sounded like a buzz-saw, right from when she was Violet Elizabeth Bott in the Just William series, and threatened to 'thcream and thcream until I'm THICK!' to get her own way... nice woman, DREADFUL voice. I saw her in ensemble in an 80's production of Broadway Pirates in the West End, and she was SOOOO sticking out like a sore thumb with that voice, and the whole 'I'm Bonnie Langford, LOOK AT ME!!!!' thing...

Great little dancer. Nice person, by all accounts. Very, very, VERY well-trained voice, for what it is. But great singer? Er, sorry, no.

How dare you say such things about the best all round performer UK has ever had!
Ok she made weird choices growing up but then again.. who didn't? she was only a kid for heaven's sake!
Have you even tried to hear what she sounds like now? I'm sure not! Go on her website and listen to samples of her albums. Her voice is amazing.
I'm going to UK in 2 weeks especially to see (and hera) her play Adelaide in Guys & Dolls in Birmingam.
I have seen a lot of performers in my life and she is one of the best I know.
BTW: remember she was only 16 when she did Cats... and already had a big career behind her.
People like you really drive me mad... I know as a moderator you have the "power" to delete this message but at least I will get it off my chest.[/quote]

She was only 16 when she did Cats?!?!?! Damn...

I liked her on the OLC, actually. The accent was a bit thick, but as an American it's going to sound a bit odd to me anyway.

She moderates other forums but she isn't a moderator of the CATS forum.Wink Aside from that, I doubt she would have deleted your opinion just because it was different from hers. Smile

Anyways, there are parts I like and dislike about most CATS recordings. I actually like the OLC jazzy version of Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer and don't recall anything really wrong with Bonnie Langford's voice....then again, I'm no expert....just a fan. Smile
One day I'm going to make my own CATS cd by selecting my favorite songs from each production and making my own multi-production full recording! Heheh...

Sorry I just find it really out of place when someone says these kind of things about a performer that has been in this business for such a long time (almost 40 years and she is the same age as me so she did start VERY young).
Bonnie has a "bad" public image but is recognised by her fellow performers as one of the most gifted and hard working in the UK.
I advise this fan to stop seeing Bonnie as the very young quite ennoying screaming/kicking performer (though I did love her when I saw her in Cats back in 1981 and had no idea who she was then) and look into the woman and performer she has become since she cut off her curls.
