Cast Bios

So, I always have a difficult time writing my biography. I don't know what to say! I always include my past experience, thank you's, funny stuff about the actual show, and then an inside joke that the cast would get.

Alana has been involved with every musical and almost every play since her freshman year at school. She’s got to admit, though, Stardust has definitely been one of the most fun! She would like to thank her family, the cast and crew of Stardust for making the show hilarious, both onstage and off, and of course, Mr. B! Alana hopes to continue working with theatre next year in college. She would also like to remind everyone that the chorus is the best…viva la Students!

What else can I include? Whenever I look at it in the program later I'm like, wow, that was lame. Any ideas?
Da_Dark_Dude

sounds fine 2 me
metaphor17

yeah, it doesn't sound too lame to me...
what are you looking for?
Amber

Although I think your bio is just fine as is, maybe you'd think it was a little "fuller" if you did a sentence listing one or two favorite past credits. That's what I always do.
Sweeney Hyde

I was just going to say that^^

heheheh. I don't know what your credits are, but that makes it a little fuller, as misericordiae and the others said. Smile
Salome

Allie..why are you never on IM when you are on line...biiiitch!
LaurelDP

My general structure is usually:

1. Small statement about myself as a performer or about me in general.
ex. Laurel is excited to be taking the Truax stage again, in this her 6th production with ECHS...

2. List of recent credits.
ex. Laurel's recent theatrical credits include:......

3. Any other tidbits
ex. Laurel is also very excited to be lending her talents as makeup designer for this production/ Laurel is excited to being playing her first villainous role in this production.

If I'm doing community theatre, I leave it at that. I've been told by a few different directors that it's tacky to thank people in your bio... that it's only to list past credits and to tell about yourself.

If I'm writing one for my highschool, I do:

4. Thank yous
ex. Laurel would like to thank the director, cast, and crew for their work, effort, etc.

And then I always say "Laurel would also like to thank Jeff Goldblum for being so awesome."

I'm just glad you didn't use the phrase "is thrilled to be"

Everyone in every bio is always so friggin' thrilled it gets exhausting. Not talking Not talking

haha, I totally know. I was guilty of that for a while til I realized it was really lame and overdone
opheliarose

yeah, don't be "delighted" -almost as bad as "thrilled" Mr. Green Don't do the wierd stream-of-consciousness thing either!

I have a basic bio saved on my computer that I just update for each show.

Ophelia, formerly known as (maiden name) just (tidbit/event of personal info involving actor-husband, whom she met onstage (sneaky way of giving shout-out)). A (my homestate) native, Ophelia has been singing, acting, and dancing at a variety of venues including(most prestigious theatres I have been anything including "spear carrier", including ones that won regional Tonys), for the past few years. Most recently she was seen as(character) in (show) at (venue). Favorite past roles include (any role I really liked, up to 3)This is Ophelia's first production with (Company X)/ Ophelia has previously appeared with (Company X) in (Show). Ophelia will next be seen in (Show if I have one lined up by printing time). Ophelia is also Artistic Director of (Company X).

I pare this down as needed, but that's pretty much what goes into each program. I have been debating on whether to put a link to my website... I just can't get past the tacky factor yet...

I'm not a pro at writing these myself, but I know it always drives me crazy when people say they have been in a show, but then don't tell us who they played. I always find it interesting to find out what parts people in the show have played in the past.

LMAO! So true!

I got sick of writing them, so I actually had something to the effect of "Jazzy is thrilled, excited, happy (Pick one) to be part of..." in my last bio... Wink

For our program at my school, I have the kids fill out a basic form, listing what shows they would like to include, who they would like to thank, and a quote or memory or inside joke. Then I have one person write them all - seniors getting more lines than underclassmen. This way there is some consistency, and those that aren't gifted in the fine art of concise aren't cheated.

Other times I use a gimmick, like a family story listing all of them in some way, or an acronym, or when we did 12 Angry Jurors I allowed them each 12 words total. Something fun and different, and often memorable.

haha, interesting...
I like the form idea, this prevents ridiculous bios from being printed (if not passed by the director/stage manager/etc.)

for instance, one of my friends once wrote for his bio:

Bob has only five words to describe this production:
Rubber chickens, Brawny paper towels.

yeah. that was his whole bio.

another friend wrote something like this:

Larry is a 77-year-old Eskimo whose interests include marshmallow hunting and crocodiles. He would like to thank his therapist, Mary Jane.

neither of which scream "professional"...

not telling you what role means "nameless ensemble"

Our community theatre doesn't give us the choice of having bios... Crying or Very sad

I'm just terrible at it! I hate it! Cause I hand mine in, and then read the program and I'm like..wow, boring. I fixed mine up a bit.

Alana **Surname removed by Mod - GB** has been involved with every musical and almost every play since her freshman year at Wego and, for her accomplishments, was named TIME Magazine's Person of the Year in 2006. She's got to admit, though, Stardust has definitely been one of the most fun! She would like to thank her family, the cast and crew of Stardust for making the show hilarious, both onstage and off, and of course, Mr. B! Alana has never been in a show that required such skills as air piano playing, acting as a bad actress, and exploring alimentary canals. Huch-hi!

We've got some humor, some thank you's, and some inside jokes.

I'm on a sick day today, by the way. This is all I've been thinking about all day!
shadowdancer

I gues it is just me, but I hate when actors try to write "funny bios." I don't knwo why, it just annoys me. I also hate when pepl use inside jokes only on eperson will get. The bio is for eveyrone, not just them . And then there are the poeple who try to be funny by saying they played certain parts a) obviously could not have b) try to make it funny c) like Godot in Waiting for Godot. I am sure it was funny the first time.
