Capt. George BrackettI was just cast as Captain George Brackett in my HS's production of South Pacific. Any info/description/suggestions for the role?

congrats! Brackett is a great role. He has often been cited as being one of the most real characters in musical theatre. many soldiers after WWII seeing the show said he reminded them of their own comanding officer. Brackett is very human. a strong take charge type with a soft side.

I agree, Brackett is one of my favorite rolls in South Pacific, especially when combined with Harbison. He has no songs, unless your director mixes you in with the rest of the chorus, but that would make no sense. he's tough and demanding - you need a good yelling voice - but he's still likable.

I also landed the part of Capt. George Brackett in my high school musical and i was wondering if anyone had any input on how his voice should be.
Any help would be great!

The director is having me speak in a very deep register. I have a higher pitched voice and he suggested speaking more from the stomach than the throat. He had me put my hand on that bone between your... eh... man boobs... (whatever you call them)... (pecs?) and keep talking in a lower and lower register until I could feel it vibrate.

I've been reading Audition by Michael Shutleff and he talks a lot about relationships between characters, especially romantic/love relationships. In our production, we changed Harbison to a female. Do you think Brackett would have romantic feelings for Harbison in this case? Or is their relationship strictly business?

I cant believe your director would do something that assinine.
Harbison can't be a female. it doesnt work with the whole dynamic of the show.
what the hell was he thinking??????
and no..if you are stuck with a f*ck up like a female Harbison..Brackett would NOT have any romantic feelings for him/her.

In the book that the musical is based on (Tales of the South Pacific), Harbison and Nellie actually have an affair.

Is the book good? I've thought about reading it.
