Calling all SMs!

How many SMs are there on this forum?

I'm currently focusing on SM in college
a Tech

I've SM'ed once, but I absolutely wouldn't call myself an official stage manager. It's definitely something I'd like to do more often, though.

I'm going to be an ASM on the Music Man in May, if that counts. I am so excited for it, it'll be my first time ASMing.

I've SM'd a couple of times, and enjoyed it, but I do get a bit frustrated at not being on stage.

I Stage Managed one show, and hated it. However, I might be willing to try it again in different circumstances.

The show I SMed had the theater's Executive Producer in the cast, and she refused to take of her "Producer" hat, even when she was in costume and makeup. She constantly argued with me and was continually overriding my backstage directions to the rest of the cast and crew, based on what she thought was best for herself personally. Very frustrating.

The fact that this woman was also my mother-in-law didn't make things any easier ...

Oh man.... ouch. that sucks.

Some SM jobs suck

I have ASM twice, once was 'Anything Goes' which was the first production after the theatre had been renovated and with a hired set !!!! Very interesting but enjoyed it as had a great crew.
Have SM'd plays and enjoy that as small cast, although they run a 3 week season. Try to do one year when musicals allow.

I've done it twice - once in my high school's production of Les Miz (my first stage managing experience...ouch) an again for Arabian Nights.

It's the best feeling EVER to be in control when things are getting good.

Wow. Les Miz first up. Tough one to debute. Did you have many crew to control ?
What are you doing next ?

I've stage managed for 14 years. Very Happy

I'm ASMing 3 productions next month (almost silmutaniously), which could get interesting. I won't SM, cause I'd rather be backstage than in the booth.

I'm hoping to go to college for SMing, but I'm taking a few years to get real experience before I go.

I had the choir tech people on my crew, most of whom I didn't know very well, and to be honest, they were a pain. Smile

I'm not sure what I'll be doing next. I'm not sure if I want to continue SMing with the Drama Department (that was Arabian Nights) because I like to be in the plays, and people were DEFINITELY easier to work with during Les Miz with the choir department. I'm actually glad that Les Miz was my first experience - I learned SO much by being thrown into it all at once!

Those of you who are studying SMing in college...do you like it? It's a (distant) possible for me...

I've SMed 15+ shows in like 3 years... do I count as being a "Stage Manager"? Most of those shows I was on stage, make-up, props, and a couple times lighting and sound director/designer... I kinda classify myself as more of a "do-it-all/over-achiever" to tell you the truth. Man, I need a life.
