call me naive, but...

call me naive, but...when mimi sings "i like it between my..." and roger interrupts her and says "fingers" in light my candle, what was she originally going to say? thanks
Desperado

I thought she was gonna say something about her breasts.
Mimi Marquez

I was thinking "I like it between my legs"
Lancelot

Ya I was thinking more about between her legs haha
broadwaybaby246

i was thinking breasts cuz she moves the candle close to her breasts when saying that line
EponineGiry

^ In the movie. THAT IS IN THE MOVIE.

really, it could be anything as long as it is suggestive enough to make sense.

It's also been done on stage that way, although many Mimis also try to put one leg between his.
theatrefanatic

i like it between my legs

definately
Luc

You're naive. Wink

No, I think it means between her legs.
EponineGiry

(Can nobody on mdn get dirtier than "legs"?)

LMAO, yes, I can think of a dirtier suggestion Wink

Actually, I always thought "breasts" for some reason... I don't know why I didn't think of legs, I guess just getting wax all the way down there.... lol
le_moofin

Legs... breasts.... ear lobes... *laughs* Something dirty? Although I dunno how dirty ear lobes are.. unless you never clean them o_O
norayouadora

I've always wondered about this, too! I mean naturally, because it's Mimi, you know that it's something dirty. And everyone always laughs at this line (well actually, the "--fingers, I figured" part), but no one really knows what it's supposed to mean. Maybe he was being intentionally ambiguous. But, I think it's supposed to be her boobs... It doesn't really make sense to put wax between your legs (ouch!), and in order to actually be "between" her legs, it would have to be on her thighs... Which really isn't that sexy. But there actually is a space between boobs, and people occasionally make use of that--um, or so I've heard! Embarassed Lol, yes, clearly I'm no expert! But that's just my $0.02 Wink

After listening to the soundtrack (mind you, this is the movie) Mimi is about to say something that starts with an 'm'. It's rather slight and you have to be listening for it, but it's there.

Therefore, I think she was gonna say 'mouth', which when you pretend that her candle is actually Roger's, um, "candle", it could be quite suggestive XD

Of course, then the sentence would be, "I like it between my mouth."
Doesn't really make sense unless the line was changed to "I like it in".
shadowdancer

I always thought it was just "fingers" I mean yes MIMI is kinda s ..um...girl who gets around, but I always thought she was trying to be flirty and he just finishes the "fingers" for her, because he knows what isoming next. But then again, waxscares me
Bill_Calhoun

I always assumed she did mean fingers, and Roger just finishes her sentence foer her. This way, it is flirty, and shows the pair are alike, and share... shall we say 'interests' for the sanctity of the board?!
Valjean

Gee, I guess I am really naive. I assumed that since the wax was dripping on her hand he just finished her sentence by saying the same as she was about to - fingers.

No, that can't be it because listen to how he says "fingers." He doesn't want Mimi to say something suggestive, so he just says "fingers."
LoneWanderer

Yeah it's definitely lips.

And not the mouth ones.
Valjean

IMNSHO she wasn't going to say anything, after all, it's a show and the script called for her to stop and Roger to say Fingers. How he said it was his and/or the directors decision. The only person who could say whether or not she was going to say something other than fingers is, unfortunately, dead.
CYTthespian

it could mean any of these suggestions, really.

there's no right or wrong, really, since no one can know for sure.

This is kinda related, I swear. In my school play this year ("Dags") there are a lot of lines where one character cuts off another, and my drama teacher made the cast write and memorize endings to those lines in case they weren't interupted (thankfully, very few of the additions were used on stage).

If a high school drama teacher asked for something like that, I'm sure at one point Daphne (along with other live Mimi's) do have something prepared in case their Roger isn't totally on the ball.

You never know, Daphne may have asked Jonathan what was being cut off, so she may know, have may have known at one point.
CYTthespian

^that's a good technique to use in situations like that.

i was in a show once and there was a woman playing my mother, and a few of the other younger teens in the show weren't very skilled at acting, and would constantly forget to interrupt the mother, so she just improvised each and every time by adding more words that made sense.
ShadowInTheWings

Oh yeah, I have seen people improv in circles when they forget a line. Without a lot of talent and quick thinking, it can be painful.
musicallover09

one time in fiddler (the wedding scene, act II) reb lazar cut tevye off early (diseased chickens) and then the rabbis son didnt know when to come in so lazar kept looking back at all the men begging him to stand and say his line...

In the script there is nothing to suggest that the world following is to start with an m. In the recording it could have just been th way that she brought her vowel round.

With this one isnt it possible that perhaps nothing was to follow at all? her "my" lingers for a little bit longer than expected, perhaps she is wanting to leave it to is imagination, hence the reason she mite move the candle toward her breasts or move her leg between his, and it is him that is trying to rid any sort of sexual image from his mind by saying "fingers...i figured..."

I was in RENT and the way that Mimi portrayed that scene seemed to me as though that was the circumstance.

That makes no sense. "I like it between my mouth." If she had two mouths, it would make sense, but I don't think any of the past Mimi's have had more than one mouth. Don't quote me on this, because I haven't seen every single Mimi, but from my recallection (sp?), all of them have only had one mouth.

Mistoteazer

i dont want to sound overly perverted but in the lyrics is says:

oh the wax, ITS

dripping, i like it between my ......TITS?

Psst... I think TVAW was being sarcastic. Smile
ALoneWanderer

The reason roger says the line following in the sorta cracked upward way he does is because (at least in all the videos I've seen of the stage show, along with the one time I saw it live) her leg is going up between his. She's blatantly flirting and her leg is going between his. This would imply the line was going to have to do with between her legs (or if you want to be even more direct about the location she likes it at you could say other things...).
