Good Luck, my tip is to look them in the face and keep your face lively and 'in character'.

I'm so sorry, I know how much it stinks to be told you didn't get a role b/c you're too tall. Heck, I'm 5'10". I don't know how much Mrs. Sowerberry has, but have a great time with it, give it all you've got, and your moment in the spotlight will come soon.

HEY dodger is better (ahah). mrs sowerberry is a great and fun role so you should be proud. thats your funeral is a great song. Anyways I got dodger and am in the rehersal stages right now. Just be lively (as said before) and spunky/know it all. When you read (if you read) the lines for him, make sure you also come off as deceptive and trying to lure Oliver in, but in a melencholy way. I no that prob sound really stupid but i think thats the jist of the character!
Good Luck!

broadwaybabe14, sorry you didnt get doger, but congrats on mrs. sowerberry. ive never heard its your funeral (i only have OBC) but she sounds like a really fun role to play--and you get water dumped on you every night!
i have a ? though:
i have oliver auditions coming up in march and i think i might get cast as a boy because im short (5'1'' or 2''ish? idk) anyway, im thinking i might try out for a boy part (im still not exactly sure who i want to be)--is this a bad idea if i dont know wheather we have a girl heavy cast? if i do try out for a boy part, do you have any suggestions?

well since ur short i would reccomend oliver, but that depends on what ur voice is like (soprano, alto) but also dodger is a great and fun role. It also depends where you stand compared tot eh other girls. Like if you prefer a female role you could go for the lead, Nancy, but if you feel like the director already has someone in mind for that go for a smaller part (i.e mrs sowerberry, widow corney, charlotte) all good parts.!

Congratulations BroadwayBabe14! Mrs. Sowerberry is a great role. My daughter is playing Bet right now, and I think their Mrs. Sowerberry is one of the best characters in the show - she's one of the ones everyone is talking about afterwards.
She plays it very cruel and dark. The song is very fun.
Good luck.

thanks momsterv! and theatre_grl, when i tried out everyone pretty much knew that the role of nancy was between these 2 other girls so i decided i was going to go for dodger and just really throw myself into it. i think i really showed them what icould do. so if you would like a boys part like dodger i say go for it, but if you would rather nancy of someone work really hard for that! good luck and let me know what happens!

im a soprano (but i can sing mezzo too), and i was thinking of trying for oliver, but ive never done anything with this theatre, so i dont know the director or the age/height of other ppl trying out, and im not sure how to make my voice sound boy-ish
it would be a lot of fun to play nancy, but i figured they would pick someone more experienced, so i was also thinking of trying out for bet

well usually i find directors are in a desperate need for an Oliver, but that depends on your company i suppose. Bet is a great role and very fun so if that is what you choose I hope your succesful, but if you'd rather have Oliver I say go for it!

Is it a youth production? If so, there may not be quite so much emphasis on size. Oliver has to look smaller and younger than the people cast as Nancy, Fagin, etc., and also smaller than Dodger. Quite often girls are used for Oliver or Dodger, and for the Fagin's boys.
My daughter just played Bet, it was an adult production. Their Oliver was 11, and almost too big. She played Oliver in an adult production when she was 10, and the Dodger was 12.
Bet was a fun role for her, she was also in the adult ensemble and had a lot of stage time.
Good luck

its a youth production, sorry i didnt say before, but that still leaves a range. if most of the adult characters are cast to 16-17yr olds, i really wouldnt have a chance at nancy. but then the majority of the cast could be younger and it wouldnt matter as much.
i think i will try out for bet anyway, bc i know she'll be a fun character, but shes a small part which is good b/c im new.
