The Guard

Calamity Jane

Has anyone ever done it? Has anyone ever seen it? Has anyone ever heard of it? What are your thoughts on it?

I was in it a few years ago, as Wild Bill Hickock, and my fiancee was Calamity Jane. Guess how we met?

Anyway, this show is a bit of an Oklahoma ripoff, and kind of a relic from the "women belong in the kitchen" days, but I think it's a really fun show, with some decent emotional moments sprinkled here and there, and some great chorus songs throughout. The solos leave something to be desired, and I think "Higher Than a Hawk" may be the worst song ever written. "My Secret Love" apparently won an award when it premiered.

The costuming and the sets were especially interesting in the college version we did. It's just, there's something about playing a character from the West that's endearing.
Marcellus

I was in the chorus in a 1991 production and thought it was more like Annie Get Your Gun than Oklahoma! The reason it was chosen over AGYG was the producer/director disliked firearms.

I liked Higher Than a Hawk and Black Hills of Dakota more than most of the other shongs in the show.
