Cabaret.. At a Highschool?

What are your thoughts on this happening?
what_the_heck013

I've seen an EXCLELENT high school production. If you've got the talent and a liberal area, I saw why not.
Holly

My current school did it the year before I came. From what I heard it was pretty well-accepted.
I Love Lockstock

As long as people are open and willing to test it out and not rag on it or anything, I think it'd be an awesome show to do at a high school.
Bianca.

we have the ideal cast for it next year.

Sally is a dream role of mine.

I'd LOVE to do it...

very very doubtful, though.
Our past three shows have been 'Good News', 'The Music Man' and 'Grease'

doesn't seem to fit.

^^I too have a great cast for it next year. A phenomenal Sally and a great Schneider and a perfect Emcee (ME!)...*sigh*...my town is WAY too small to accept Cabaret...they certainly lashed out when Gypsy was performed.

If you push for it, it will happen. A couple of years ago, one of my friends really wanted to do West Side Story at the high school because Tony was his dream role. He kept pushing and pushing until the theatre department gave in and did the show, which turned out to be fabulous. And if it makes you feel any better, the prior shows were Grease and Hello, Dolly!

Also, here's an example of a HS production of Cabaret. These guys borrowed heavily from the revival, even so, not too shabby;

Agreed. My schools past shows were things like 'Grease!' and 'Bye Bye Birdie' but at some point they did 'Cabaret'. (We did a revue last year honoring 10 years of theater at my school, and 'Cabaret' was the third show we had on the list). Also, we're doing 'West Side Story' this year because I pushed for it.

'Cabaret' can easily be done by a high school. If the admins are worried about it being too risque, it's understandable, but in my opinion, if the girls are sexy but not slutty, then it's acceptable.

See, in my town, we would have to have the girls dress very conservatively. That wouldn't be the biggest issue though, the biggest problem with my school doing it would be the abortion thing.

but the girls in cabaret are sluts. you cant gloss it over. that plus the abortion scene and the smoking....it may not go over in an average high school. but in a liberal school that accepts it as art it can work well.

It really depends on the school. My high school, for example, would NEVER be able to pull it off without our administration having a fit. However, I did see an amazing performance of it done at the local performing arts high school. But, then again, key word "performing arts high school."
Gwen

We're doing a production of it next year...and our theater program (if I may say,) is awesome. (Though we previously did Hello Dolly with the leads basically being pre-cast a year in advance, ew.) I'd be interested in playing the Emcee...though it sounds like a scary part to play.
Amy_Vocalist

I done Cabaret in Secondary School, when I was in my last year (upper 6th)

I played sax.
UniquePerspective

Well, my high school picked that for next year. Can't find out from the actor's perspective since I'm off to college in August, but, will defintely be watching to find out from the audience perspective.

My High School is crazy...they did Hair the year before I got there, Caberet my freshman year, then HMS Pinafore, 42nd Street, Annie, Get your Gun, last year they did Beauty and the Beast, and the rumour is they are doing Chicago next year...

I wish my high school would do good shows like that; But we get stuck with things like The Wizard of Oz and Oklahoma. Who knows maybe they will do something like Cabaret next year.
TheWitch

You all are lucky that your highschools do full shows. In TX theres a state wide one-act competition so the highschools in my town pretty much just work on that the whole year.

Our school's doing Cabaret this fall. We usually do musicals in the spring, but our drama teacher moved it to fall so our dance team could audition and she couldn't get the auditorium long enough, but we think it's because her daughter's getting married.

If you can, I say got for it! I wish I could do a show like Cabaret at my high school, but if we get in trouble for having rap songs in dance concert, can you imagine what would happen if we did Cabaret? Confused Dumb, I know. But, I say go for it. If your administraitor and principle don't have a problem with it, that is. Otherwise, your director could get into REEEEAAALY big trouble.

Re: Cabaret.. At a Highschool?

Quite honestly I do not believe that a highschool can put on such a musical. You may hate me for saying this, but I don't care... it may be the content of the play. It's depth and perception is something that a highschool actor cannot quite grasp. As much as I would love to do this musical now as a highschool student, I know that it can't be pulled off because of the level of acting highschool students are at. There are just some shows that Highschools can't do. For instance:

Phantom of the Opera
Avenue Q
Les Miserables (Not Highschool Edition).
Rent
The Lion King

Those are just a few, but I don't know if you quite grasp my point or not. It's hard for me to express it in writing. But I tried.

Les Miserables High School Edition is almost exactly the same as the original show.

Cabaret auditions started today at my school. Today is dance.

Well there is hope for highschools. Our Highschool did it last year and I thought becuase of all the complaining parents it would turn out horribly compared the risque version on chicago i had done the summer before with a privite group in the town. Overall it was a "highschool production" but it turned out really well! If you have any questions on how we did things just ask.
snowhite880

I live in a pretty liberal town in Cali.
Last year, the neighboring flaming conservative town did Cabaret, and it was pretty well accepted, they didn't change anything. Their previous musicals were Brigadoon, Cinderella and Grease.

Age does not always define one's level of understanding, nor does it always define one's ability. I agree that there are some shows that high schools shouldn't do, but I don't think Cabaret should be completely undone by high schools.

last november i saw a high school production of cabaret, and it was one of the best school or community shows i have ever seen!

my mother is usually quite critical of school shows, and she even said it was the best school production she's ever seen.
lottie

Well I see no reason why they shouldn't do it, but my current drama coach was fired from performing arts school for putting it on. *Tsk Tsk....to the ones who fired him, not him!*

On the other hand, though, a local community theater has decided to put on Cabaret, and I auditioned. Understand, I'm only almost 16, so the director didn't think he was going to use me, but after my audition he really wanted to. He says I could bring a lot to the production, and it would add effect because, back the, there wasn't a drinking age or anything. It would show what times were like.

I know a fair amount about the musical- I know the story and characters- but I haven't seen it, and my parents hadn't either. My dad asked some relatives he's staying with right now 300 miles away and they were appalled, saying it's nasty and the people putting it on very well may be nasty. I disagree- as has been said here, it's just a form of art, and as for the people, they all have incredibly good references. Also, the director spoke to my mom and discussed it and told her that allowances would be made for my age- more conservative, etc.

So how can I show my dad how wonderful Cabaret is and how safe it will really be? Any ideas?[/code]
