Cabaret in High SchoolsIs there any way Cabaret could be edited for high schools in an appropriate manner? |

I really don't think so because the plot is so reliant on the fact that Sally had an abortion it would make no sense why she is singing "Cabaret". Although if that portion somehow gets cleared, then you could just do the costumes and dances more conservertly.

nah it would lose its touch! cabaret shouldn't be changed at all!!

I found pictures of it done at high schools. http://www.finchhaven.com/digital/Cabaret/Act_1/Act_1,_Scenes_1,_2,_3/index_web.html http://www.pbase.com/steveg003/cabaret http://www.jproscenium.org/cabaretshow/Cabaret_Show_Page_1.html |

That first show looks amazing! The costumes are fantastic. Our school would never have let us do Cabaret, and certainly not in those costumes.

I've known of a few schools that have done it. I say go for it if your school is liberal. If it's the music of the show that you really like, why not stage a concert version or a musical revue. And don't limit yourself to just Cabaret. You can do a whole revue of songs from Cabaret, Chicago, and other musicals by Kander and Ebb.

la la la la lathanks for all the help!!! to be honest...a revue and my school wouldn't mix, just because we are actor-singers, we aren't a choir auditioning for a musical...lol...I WOULD, but a lot of people would understandably be upset...and thanks for the pictures! I would have never thought to look at other high school's productions...maybe i could contact them and ask what alterations (if any) they made...=) thanks guys! |

My school did it last year - I didn't see it though (this was my first year here). I personally am not very familiar with the show, but from pictures and from things it doesn't seem like much was changed to make it more "appropriate."

I know that the first show did the original 66 production. The second one was the original but they added Mein Herr (at the beginning of Act 2), and one other song who the gallery owner can't recall.
The third one added Mein Herr, Maybe This Time, and I Don't Care Much, but with the original's script (as far as 'book scenes' go.) It also had the revival's ending. I think. |

I directed Cabaret at the High School where I teach and we kept everything including the costumes and the kiss between Bobby and Cliff. Our production was very much like the Donmar Warehouse production in London which inspired the recent Broadway revival. Our administration was very supportive and did not request any changes to the production. We got nothing but Kudos from parents, staff and students

We did Cabaret my 11th grade year... our principal was morman... we didn't change anything. We did it skanky clothes and all. The only problem we ran into was peoples parents not allowing them to audition... but it didn't matter because we still had more than enough people who were allowed to be in it.
It's not that bad of a show. Yeah, Sally has an abortion... but that's something that happens everyday weither we want to face it or not. |

I feel as though the school as well as the community would have to be very liberal. Also you'd have to have a really good high school boy playing the Emcee.
I saw a youth theatre production of Cabaret in Buffalo (my friend played Sally) and the cast were ages 14-20 I believe and it was directed by a college student. It was honestly the best production of Cabaret I've seen. And for those who know me, I'm a theatre snob and picky lol They pulled it off well and left everything intact. Also their staging of the finale was absolutely brillant. Better then the production I had seen that was performed and directed by adults a year later. |

WOw...this makes me feel MUCH better about wanting to do it at my school

I think that if you have to change anything you shouldn't do the show. I was recently The Emcee in a high school aged production. So freaking much fun.

Awesome! Your pictures are ex-cell-ont-ay...haha... Which version did you do? ((and/or)) which one do you think is better??? Cause yeah...idk which one our school would do IF we did it...fgkjsdfngkjsfn...=) |

We did mostly the original but made a bunch of song changes. We did the first revival's Money Song, added I Don't Care Much, Mein Herr, and Maybe this Time, added the monologue into the middle of If You Could See Her, and cut Perfectly Marvelous and Why Should I wake up as our Cliff couldn't sing.
As a show I prefer the most recent very adult version (I saw a local professional production done that way), but for highschools I think it can be a little awkward. I like the angle of taking what you like from each production, even though it's illegal. |

Haha...don't we all...jk, I've never done it but...the thing about that is, ((ESPECIALLY in high schools)) is that sometimes people can't sing certain things and need to be cut andddd I meannn it's STILL the SAME SHOW if you do that-you're just making your OWN version, and at this age. it's need to experiment and mesh things and, you know? PLUS I LOVE MEIN HERR AND MAYBE THIS TIME----SO as long as it's THOSE that you added....hahahahhaha |

So so so illegal lol. I wish for once they would just release the revival version with these songs for amateur theatre. |

My school has done Cabaret in the past and we did two numbers (Wilkommen and Mein Herr) in our revue this past year. I was Helga in Wilkommen, and we had a lot of girls on the floor with their legs spread in the air, but while my friend and I were watching the tape the other day, we figured out that we were sexy, but not slutty. You just have to try to keep it that way if you do a production.

That makes a lot of sense. Good advice. =D |
