Broadway versionHow closely does the Broadway recording represent the musical numbers licensed to North American productions? I know that Samuel French grants some leeway with adding numbers, but I'm just curious if the recording contains all the numbers in their licensed keys and instrumentations. |

The Broadway cast recording doesn't contain all of the music in the licensed version, not by half. Here's a list of all the musical numbers and, where applicable, how they differ from the versions you probably know: Prologue / The Story of Chess Freddy’s Entrance ("What a scene," First verse only) Press Conference ("Smile, you got your first exclusive story," shortened) Where I Want to Be Argument ("How Many Women" on the recording) Merchandisers Song (One verse only) Diplomats ("US vs. USSR" one verse only) Opening 1st Game (The "Global TV Fanfare") Chess #1 (underscore) Quartet Florence/American ("You Want To Lose Your Only Friend" on the recording) Someone Else's Story Golden Bangkok (Longer than on the recording, it's closer to the London one) One Night in Bangkok Terrace Duet Chess #2 (underscore) Florence Quits ("So you got what you want," same as London) A Taste of Pity Nobody's Side Defection (Underscore) Reporters (Same as London) Anthem Budapest 1988 (Essentially an entr'acte) Hungarian Folk Song Heaven Help My Heart Winning ("No Contest" on the Recording) You and I Freddie Goes Metal (Unique to the broadway score, uses Freddie's theme from "The Deal") Let's Work Together (Also unique, a tango arrangement of "Bangkok" for Walter and Molokov) I Know Him So Well Pity the Child Budapest Streets (underscore) Father’s Lullaby Endgame You and I (Reprise) Finale (The anthem finale) Exit Music (bows, it's a Nobody's Side / You and I reprise) Arbiter (Included at the end of the score as an optional piece) Lyrics and such are available here: http://www.squareone.org/Chess/broadway.html Hope this helps! I didn't include playoffs and scene shifts, but there are some of those as well, usually just a reprise of the previous song's melody. |

Again the knowledge (and the lengths certain people go to share such knowledge) on this board surprise(s) me. Thanks very much!
Is any of "The Russian and Molokov" in the score? I rather like that exchange before "Where I Want To Be" |

At the end of "Press Conference," there is a section of it, but it just serves as an underscore for the dialogue that leads into "Where I Want To Be." I wish there was more of it, too, it's one of the cut numbers that I really miss in the Broadway score... but it's nice to at least get a snippet of it. |

Well, "How Many Women" uses the same melody as "The Russian and Molokov", so you do have the melody there. Besides, the scene before Where I Want to Be is much better without the song, as the song feels out of place in that setting.

actually Lets Work together is not unique to broadway. it was used in australia as well as the tour.

I keep forgetting that "Let's Work Together" is in the Sydney version. While I love the song in its full Broadway incarnation, the Sydney abbreviation/placement makes it feel like a minute-long "Dealus Interuptus" to me. (Actually, much as I love Sydney as a whole, several pieces of the Sydney "Deal" feel like that -- it really doesn't need to be a 15-minute song.)

ah, true true - I did know that Let's Work Together was included, at least in part, in the Sydney "The Deal" -- but I forgot about the US Tour. But then again, the US Tour is probably better forgotten anyway |
