Broadway Tour - Nicolette Hart - Over the Moon

I saw the Rent Broadway Tour when it was in Cleveland and I was disappointed in Nicolette Hart's performance of "Over the Moon." She sped up in certain areas and slowed down in certain areas. I had seen the movie before I saw the show and I loved Idina Menzel's version of "Over the Moon." I'm a Idina Menzel fan. (She's done a great job in both Rent and Wicked!) Were other people disappointed in her "Over the Moon" performance?

I was disappointed in her entire performance.

(But I saw her on Broadway, not on tour.)

I just saw her on Wednesday and thought that out of the 3 Maureens I've seen professionally on stage (Eden Espinosa, Nicolette Hart, and some other one that I can't remember without digging through old programs), as well as against Idina in the movie, Nicolette has been my favorite by far. I don't want to start some kind of a flame war, but I really didn't like Idina's "Over The Moon" in the movie. I may feel differently if it was a stage production, but for the movie I didn't feel too great about it.

And as for Nicolette speeding and slowing stuff; isn't that a good thing? Call me crazy, but when I see a show for a second or third (or ninth or tenth as with some Rent-heads) I don't want the performances to be exactly the same as the previous times. Isn't that the whole point of live theatre? That every performance is a unique occurance, and that no two performances will turn out 100% exactly the same.

I agree. I LOVED her! I saw her in Legally Blonde as well, and I'm not crazy about her voice, but her acting is phenomonal.

When I saw her, the mic didn't echo (I think on LIFE life life life..) but she kept mouthing it. So she improvised with "That was so cool in my mind" and it was hilarious!

I saw her back in January at the DPAC and thought she was incredible. I don't get all the hate.

I saw her in Detroit this past Friday and out of all the Maureens I have seen, she is by far my least favorite. She sings off pitch a lot, and not in that "I'm trying to get into my character" sort of way. She has too rough of a voice, and Maureen is supposed to sound completely pure-tone on some parts throughout the show. I liked her in Legally Blonde, but not Rent. I also prefer to see Maureen played by a brunette, but thats just my opinion
theatre4life

i, too, think Maureen should only be brunette. but, let's face it - nobody will ever top Idina, and only Eden can compare.

I agree with that 100%

You're funny.
What you own

I don't understand why every one thinks Maureen can only be played by a brunette. I don't see what the probleam is with haveing a bloude Maureen.

I agree. The Maureen that I saw on the non-eq. tour was blonde and I thought she was really good.

^Christine Dwyer?

I haven't seen her live, but based off recordings I've heard of her, I'm not really impressed. I'll form my full opinion when I see her in May.

About the whole blonde Maureen thing . . .I don't really care for it. No, she doesn't have to be a brunette, but it just doesn't seem RIGHT to me. I'm a bit of a "if the orignal cast was this way, the rest of the cast should be". It took me forever to get used to Adam Kantor being a black haired Mark.

I'm pretty sure Christine Dwyer isn't blonde. Alex must have seen an understudy.

Oh, okay. Just curious.

Well not that this will help anything, but two of my best friends saw the tour, and BOTH are extremely difficult Maureen critics (especially the one, as it's her dream role), and they both LOVED Nicolette. I can't personally say what I think since I haven't seen her, but if they loved her, I think she MUST be good.

Now, as for who I HAVE seen, I will say this: Eden Espinosa was COMPLETELY wrong for Maureen in SOOO many ways. Vocally she was GREAT, everything else, not so much. She was way way wayyy too butch for Maureen, not pretty enough for Maureen (the bangs KILLED me), and to me, didn't understand, or rather, couldn't illustrate the flirtiness of the character well enough. Say what you will, this is just my opinion. She was absolutely a wrong choice for Maureen... and I saw her on the last public performance of the show too, so it wasn't nerves.

With that said... Maureen was originally written as a blonde, so I can't quite grasp how a blonde "wouldn't" be right for the role. Sure, Idina was a purmed brunette, wasnt every brunette in the 90s? And yes, Jonathan added the line in Christmas Bells about Mark thinking Mimi looked like Maureen (which I'm SURE was done just for Idina), but hey, the workshop Maureen was blonde, and if that's how Jonathan originally wrote her, I think we can agree that it's definitely plausible for her to be blonde.

And, of course, in La Boheme, Musetta is almost always cast as a blonde or a redhead, because opera!Mimi is specifically described as a brunette and the audience needs to be able to tell them apart.

(End totally random opera babble)

What an awful state of mind to be in.

Yeah, that's pretty ridiculous. There have been numerous non-brunette Maureens over the years, blondes and even redheads, yes. In fact, brunettes have been in the minority.

And, same with Marks. Adam Kantor was hardly the first non-blonde Mark.

I just saw it today. Nicolette Hart was grating. Just awful.

Did anybody get the sense that Adam and Anthony's microphones were turned up louder than everyone else's? Anthony's voice completely drowned out Joanne's voice during Tango Maureen, and Adam's voice overpowered Mimi in all their songs.
affairoftheheart

I just saw her last night and I loved her "Over the Moon". I thought it was amazing.

Did I see you last night? I was there too! : )
Tall girl with a friend shorter than her? Kind of hyper? Said she came around 3:30? --That was me. ^ ^ Waited at the stage door untill around 11:15? Were you there? ^ ^
lbibeachman86

Just saw her, i liked Eden the best of Idina, Nicolette, and Eden.

Nicolettes was'nt good enough i don't think, maybe i just have high theater standerds, but who knows!

Also, Joanne had an understudy, not sure who it was, but she was dispointing, because at some moments her voice would give me chills, and at others it was just plain out flat!

Was it Trisha Jeffrey by chance?
lbibeachman86

It was! I relle wanted it to be Gwen Stewart, but she did amazing in her parts anyhow!
ActingDude17

Gwen Stewart is always amazing (and a complete sweetie at the stage door).
Alabesque

Apparently I'm in the minority on this, but I really liked Nicolette's 'Over the Moon.' I thought it was really funny and entertaining.

But I hate Idina's 'Over the Moon,' so maybe I'm just... Backwards.
MusicalAstronaut

I agree about Idina in the movie, that part always feels a little awkward to me. My friend who I made watch the movie was like "wtf was that?" and I just told him it makes much more sense when you see it live...
