Broadway Horror!Dear Musicals.Net Posters,
Which horror musical is your favorite? Do you like too many horror musicals to select a favorite? Do you really dislike horror musicals?
Horror musicals include such musicals as Sweeney Todd and Carrie. EEK!
Thanks in advance for your replies.

The only "Horror" musical that is any good is Sweeney Todd. and its because the horror story setting is merely a backdrop for the human emotions and character playouts in the show.
Sweeney is a true masterpiece.
All other musicals based on horror stories have proven dreadful. the amatuerish writing and childish plot of J&H, the over blown inadvertant self parody of Carrie, the unmelodic score and lack of emotional connection of Dracula.

Little Shop Of Horrors and The Nightmare Before Christmas are also good. If you count them as "horror".

Ypou have to be kidding...the late steve barton..although a good singer was far from great..plus "Vampire" was a flop, based on a really bad Roman Polanski film.

I agree with Salome. The only good horror musical is Sweeney Todd (and Little Shop of Horrors if you count that as a horror).
Musicals such as Carrie and Evil Dead make me sick.

I'm not a huge fan of horror musicals either, love horror films however. I can't say I don't like Jekyll and Hyde, don't know the music, so I wanna explore it though.

Sweeney Todd without a doubt is the best horror musical ever written. Until Sweeney, horror was not a genre that had been explored by the legitamate musical theatre. I believe horror musicals can only work when the "horror" is a secondary element. Sweeney is not just about killing and cannibalism. It is about a man who was terribly wronged and everything that would have caused him joy was stripped away from him.
I believe Little Shop of Horrors is also a horror, although on a different level than Sweeney. Little Shop is something of a parody of our lives and what we are willing to do to get what we want. Little Shop also uses comedy moreso than the other horrors shows.
I think that The Phantom of the Opera is also a great example as to how horror as a secondary genre can work, as Phantom is primarily a romance. It is the horror element in it that helps drive the show and make the Phantom a person that Christine may love, but he is a murderer...Phantom's element of horror in the disfigurement of his face also being about a point in the story pertaining to the idea to look past ugliness and to see someone for who they are.
I believe one of the big reasons so many lovers of the musical theatre are divided over Jekyll and Hyde is that it IS primarily a horror story. The authors added the story of Lucy and Emma into it to bring in a romantic element. I mean, Stevenson's novel is, I think, one of the best examples of a pure horror story. I think that if people would understand the nature and ideas behind Jekyll and Hyde better, the theatrical community might not be so divided over it. Personally, I think Jekyll and Hyde is a great musical.
Dracula...I would have liked to see Wildhorn's Dracula before it closed. I think the idea of Dracula, strictly based on the book by Stoker, could be a great musical. I'm going to wait until the concept album is released to say anything more about it though.
Tanz der Vampire...I really can't say...It too, like Jekyll and Hyde is probably a strict horror musical, but even moreso...I really can't say anything about though as i know very little about it.
Rocky Horror Picture Show and Carrie...I'm not even going to go down that road...
The horror musical is a delicate piece of art and must be treated very delicatly by the authors as to how the present it and what their main focus is going to be. I, for one, love horror musicals. However, I don't believe by a long shot that all of them are good. Sweeney Todd, The Phantom of the Opera, Jekyll and Hyde, and Little Shop of Horrors are what I would consider the best. Each one uses the aspect of horror in a different light...I think that is what a horror musical needs to be successful. It needs to be different than the others that have triumphed before it.

I don't count Little Shop as a horror show. I define horror musicals as musicals that 1. involve gross and horrifying ideas of the plot (Sweeney Todd.... when you first learn about the plot, it's a teeny bit shocking) or 2. are written with the intention of frightening the audience or giving the audience a suspenseful night. Horror musicals usually don't involve laughter. However, Little Shop is primarily a comedy with a plot point that is a little disturbing if you thought of it out of context. However, in context, it's funny. People see Little Shop to laugh and have a good time. Therefor, I don't think it counts as a horror show.

However Little Shop of Horrors does invoke a sence of suspension and has moments that are very thrilling. Sweeney Todd IS funny. Whenever I watch I laugh. There are several verry funny moments in Sweeney Todd, funnier than many "musical comedies". So obviously a horror show can be funny and make people laugh. Also, people go to shows in the first place to have a good time. You're not going to shell out $120 to go see Sweeney Todd and NOT laugh and NOT have a good time and NOT enjoy yourself. Your entire statement is very contradictory...I don't think that a horror show needs to FRIGHTEN, as this is VERY hard. I don't think that Sweeney Todd is not frightening on the level that you can't sleep or that you are actually scared to watch it. It is a since of thriller and antispcation that makes Sweeney Todd and the other horror musicals "scary".

I've never seen it or heard the music so I wouldn't know. Two of my theatre pals did see it though. I can ask them what they thought of it. I know they thought it was very funny but they have a twisted sence of humor at times...
