Bowing out gracefully

I'm leaning heavily towards dropping out of a show I've been cast in. I don't want to tell them the REAL reason that I'm dropping out (the role I've been cast in is a waste of my time, I find some of the role shuffling that has gone on since auditions to be extreemely shady, and frankly, the whole show sounds like a train wreck waiting to happen. But I don't want to entirely burn my bridges with these people.) I'm planning to use the "scheduling conflicts" excuse, but my cover will be entirely blown if anyone involved with the show sees me at some other auditions I'm planning to go on...I've got a couple of projects already lined up for later in the spring. I'm kinda feeling like I need to drop out NOW if I'm going to, since they just sent out the rehearsal schedule (they auditioned WAY in advance, almost a month before rehearsals were due to start. We're supposed to start a week from Monday.) Guess I'm rambling. Just wondering if anyone has some thoughts on the least offensive way to tell them to bug off?

what role and show?

Othello.

A bunch of crappy little messenger roles. Also wants me to choreograph.

Yeah, I'd split now before you get too far into rehearsal.

It's all economics: marginal cost versus marginal benefit.

By qutting, is what you're going to lose more than what you might possibly gain? Or vice versa?

(Me personally - I would pull out of a train wreck production. I would sooner take that time off to audition for better things, take some good classes, actually get my ass to the gym, etc, and then jump into the next good show.)

Ahhh...that was the step I was missing!

I formally quit this morning- just said I needed to prioritize my time right now. He thanked me for letting him know now rather than later.

Since I do have projects lined up for after this one, I decided a break would be a very good idea right now. I haven't had more than a few nights off in a row in over 2 years, and my expenses would've just about broke even with what I would get paid.
