Bonnie-New York Accent Help?Hey!
My school is doing anything goes, the 60s version (bum ey?) and auditions are on the way in a few weeks..
I'm glad because there is practicly nobody going for bonnie because shes only supporting and so i think i actually might have a chance! (its my first ever chance to have a big part because im in year 10 now so thats the youngest you can be to get a lead) and yes.. im super enthusiastic and whatnot.. but thats not my question!
for the auditions, to get bonnie i have to be able to speak with a very strong new york accent. I am australian, and my accent is a little weird.. i sound a tad english as well, and i also have no idea whatsoever what new yorkers sound like. So would someone give me a few tips on how to pronounce words be bonnie and how to sing in that accent?
anything is cool really, i just need some help.. i really want to cream this audition
thanks everyone!

I'm doing Anything Goes right now actually, tomorrow night we open! One of my best friends is playing Bonnie (we are also doing the 60's version) and she encountered the same problem. Our director suggested she watch "My Cousin Vinnie" and "A League of Their Own" for accent tips, there are characters in both of those films that have similar accents to Bonnie. Also, the "Guys and Dolls" film with Frank Sinatra and Marlon Brando, that show has the character Adelaide who has a similar accent. To help her with her songs I also wrote out the lyrics phoenetically how you would pronounce them with the NY accent. It helps. Break a leg at the audition!

When I played Erma, I watched My cousin Vinnie a ton. It helped sooo much. Another option, and a character I tried to base my character off of, was watching Matilda. The mom is kinda the accent you're looking for. Also, Moon has your same accent in the play, so you two should be running lines to make sure your accents match. He can probably help a ton with your accent.

Oh, ha, silly me. I didnt know you didnt have the part yet. Well, I guess since the Moon part is out of the question, just watch the movies and remember: NO Rs!!!! and if you have any lines with "snake eyes" in them( i know I did at my audition), make sure you say it "snake OYEs." Our musical director was from Brooklyn and made a big deal about that one.
