Bollywood -- this time with actual movies for you to watch.

The last time I asked if anybody else liked Bollywood (which is sort of like Indian musicals), a couple of people expressed interest in the art form. So I decided to post a few of my favorites for you.

The first thing I'll post is a video link to a popular song from each movie. Bollywood films are often judged by how good their music is, and really, I'm much more inclined to give a Bolly film a glowing review if the music is good. Most Bollywood actors are talented actors, but 99% of the time, they do not do their own singing. The singers are professionals called "playback singers," and some of them are as famous as the actual actors. The art of lip syncing and matching these songs up to great visuals/dances is referred to as picturizing.

If you watch the clip of the song and enjoy it, click on the movie poster/screenshot above the link to go to part 1 of that movie subtitled in English. You should be able to find all of the other parts in the "related videos" box off to the right. I recommend having two tabs open, one for the odd-numbered parts and one for the even-numbered, so you don't have to wait in between parts and can watch it continuously. (It works for me, anyway.) Fair warning: Bollywood movies are usually 2-3 hours long, so don't start watching one if you can't afford to stay up all night.

If the song sample/film doesn't show subtitles during the song (which some films do to keep the fancy visuals nice and neat), you can find most of the translated lyrics through a google search.

And no, I will not eat your babies if you don't like it or disagree with my reviews. And yes, that was a shameless plug.

I saw this one movie where they sang and played cricket against the British. It was gooood.

I had to watch that movie twice, once in high school, and once in a college film class.

Was it--by any chance--Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, the first flick on the list? It's a couple of years old, and one of the lead actors is a cricket player.

No, I know which one Alex means. Lagaan, right? It's a GREAT movie. One of the first Hindu/Bollywood flicks I saw... gorgeous music, great acting, etc. It's one of my friends favorite movies and we watch it all the time =3

Oh, okay! Yeah, I've only seen one or two of the songs from Lagaan; it's on my list, but I haven't gotten to it yet.
