Blood BrothersThought I'd make a thread because there isn't really any other places I can discuss the show.So... Does it annoy anyone else that the OLC is so different from the current show? I don't like listening to the OLC anymore, because loads of the songas are different.. and I don't really like them. Anyway, what does everyone else think? |

I love Blood Brothers. One of my favourite shows.
I've saw it once on the UK tour. I've got the 1995 London Cast Recording I think. |
||||||
| Catherine |
Yeah, I think I prefer the 1995. Though Barbera (sp?) Dickson is amazing. I downloaded most of them so it doesn't really matter, but when i'm not on the computer... grrr |
||||||

My observations:
The OLC with Barbara Dickson is terrible. The orchestrations are annoying, it sounds like it was recorded in a bathroom with a four piece band. The Kiki Dee recording is for me the most superior, best recording, most natural sounding. The Stephanie Lawrence recording is poor, Stephanie's Liverpudlian accent is so forced and grating yet she wasn't like it on stage. There's also a problem with the recording in that huge amounts of echo have been added. If I play it through my computer, I change settings to remove it to make it sound more natural. The International Cast recording isn't bad, it ranks 2nd out of the 4 for me. However, Willy Russell as the narrator doesn't cut it. There's no malice or threat in his voice. |

I think Blood Bros. is Willy's best.
| Quique |
The 1988 Kiki Dee recording is definitely superior. The mixing is warm and makes great use of bass.
I saw the show twice back in 1995 and loved it. The only song I can't stand is "Kid's Song." Grating. |

I like Blood Brothers alot but it cant beat Educating Rita. |
||||||
| Catherine |
I've definately heard of that... not quite sure though. Whats it about? |
||||||
| Salome |
Wily Russell's first play. (not a musical)
Its about na alchoholic Oxford english professor who takes on a liverpool born adult woman and teaches her lit and english and they wind up heping each other. its kind of a modern twist on Pygmalion. the fiulm starred micheal Caine and Julie Walters. great stuff..funny,touching and just really gripping. |

True, when I was writing it, I knew I hadn't taken one play into consideration. |

Shirley Valentine is great, too.

does anyone know if the song, i think its called madwoman, where mrs Lyons has a breakdown, is in any of the recordings, i cant find it to download anywhere, and it isnt on the song list on any of the recordins i've seen, i was just wondering because it's one of my favourite parts of the show, and was hoping if theres a specific recording which includes it that i would be able to get that one.
| wicked_boy |
Is it before she gets the knife to Mrs Johnson? |
||||||
| Catherine |
Is it like little children chanting "High on the hills theres a woman gone mad"?
I don't think you'll be able to get the recording anywhere if it is that. |
||||||
| wicked_boy |
That's the one I'm thinking Angel-of-Music* is thinking of. |
||||||
| Jordan |
I've just checked the 4 English cast recordings that I have, it's not on any of them. |
||||||
| wicked_boy |
Neither is Bright New Day (preview). |
||||||
| Angel-of-Music* |
oh, never mind, thanks anyway guys. i really like that part, i was hoping to use it in my gcse for drama. |
||||||

My new school is doing this. |
||||||
| wicked_boy |
You'll have fun. It's a deep storyline. |
||||||
| Catherine |
Whatd so bad about that? Could anyone tell me the vocal range for Mrs Johnstone... I've search but to no avail.. |
||||||
| kozafluitmusique |
nothing is wrong...i have nothing against it, it's just when i found out, i thought it was a small cast & i didnt know it was a chorus.
| Catherine |
Ah ok. |

Love this show. Saw it in the summer hols with my family. I do think it's over-rated though - I'd heard so much praise for it. Don't get me wrong, it was good, but not THAT good.
I had to study Educating Rita for my GCSE English. Don't know if I'd say I prefer it though, but I've never seen it performed, just read it. |

I'm seeing it in London in two weeks.

Ooh cool! Have fun! Slight change of subject, what is everyone's favourite songs? I like Gypsies in the Wood, Light Romance, and most of the others where the Narrator just pops up and says "The devils got your number, mate". And, I think that Light Romance tugs more at my emotions (especially whilst singing it) than Tell Me Its Not True. Obviosuly not on stage, I mean, its bloody hard not to cry then, but listening to it the other day, I found Light Romance more emotional. |
||||||
| wicked_boy |
I love whenever the Narrator pops up and sings reprises of the "Devil Song". I also love I'm Not Saying a Word, Easy Terms and Bright New Day. I also love the whole "Take me Dancing" repetiveness and all the different meanings of "dancing" Mrs Johnstone uses during the "Marylin Monroes".

Could I get people's opinion of the best cast recording to purchase? I downloaded the Barbara Dickson one from iTunes but its seems that this is not the most popular one.
I've just been cast as Mr Lyons in a community production. What's the role like? Thanks! |

Easy Terms is beautiful.
| Buff Daddy |
Could you explain that? I'm confused. Buff |
||||||
| kozafluitmusique |
Easy Terms is beautiful! It has a wonderful opportunity to have an ensemble harmony...I just love it. Also it's just so sad. I love Blood Brothers. .. I'm so sad the show's over at my high school! |

^ What they said.
Musically, it's written beautifully, the lyrics are moving and it's my favourite song in the piece. |

I know the song is from BB, but I was confused as it didn't answer either of my questions:

Good God Jen! You bring me home in the middle of the day just to tell me you haven't seen him for an hour?? We must get something for your nerves. Take a letter Miss Jones quote I regret to inform you. Hmm .. ask Catherine (she may know) ... but I don't know...maybe the 1988 London Cast? *shrugs* Grats on getting Mr. Lyons though! |

1994 CR is my personal favourite. (I think it's 94, if not it's about 94.)

I just got back from seeing it in London. Absolutely amazing! Stunning voices and acting, I'll try to post a review a bit later when I find my programme.

A recent review of Blood Brothers is on the MusicalTalk website:

Blood Brothers is generally amazing; It's so underrated - I think I went to see it when I was about twelve and I remember thinking "Can't I go and see something else instead?" But I'm so glad I saw it. Blood Brothers made me laugh, cry and most things in between.
I don't really remember much of the music, apart from Tell Me It's Not True, but the acting was absolutely outstanding. I think you can sort of tell it's written by a playwright not used to musical theatre. It wasn't really a stereotypical musical I suppose. So, just to clarify, which cast recording should I buy? |

I went to see blood brothers in Liverpool, what a night, I think audiences, especially the ones in Liverpool LOVE this show, as it's such a realistic representation of Liverpool life, and the big class divide.

I'm seeing it for the third time this year! I'm so excited!
| wtfchuck |
I saw it for the first time last november and i was stunned by it
I listen to the soundtrack all the time (i've got the 1995 one and i quite like it) Studying it for my GCSE drama course was fun too, I got to play the part of Eddie who i think, personally, is one of the best characters. and singing "my friend" as a duet with Mickey is one of my favourite parts of the play. and playing linda in the school scene with mickey is fun, you can play around to get such a funny "whiney scouse" sort of accent, so funny. x |
