Black Phantom?Have there been any black Phantoms? I'm curious, since if my school did it (after the rights came out and everything) we'd most likely have a black Phantom since we have like two white guys and twelve black guys in our castI'm interested on everyone's thoughts on the matter ^_^ |

In the broadway show, the Piangi/Phantom switch is pulled off because he wears a long cape and has the hood pulled over, so you never see his actual face.
I don't see any problems with having a black phantom, as long as he looks totally mutuated under the mask. But the rights to Phantom.....it's been on Broadway for 18 or so years now, and I haven't heard of anyone getting rights to it yet. I would be very suprised if the rights came out in the next year. |

Re: Black Phantom?
You likely will have graduated by then.
Anyway, there has been one black Phantom. Robert Guillaume. http://www.theatre-musical.com/phantom/guillaume.html There have been a couple of black Piangis: Marcus DeSando and John Whitney come to mind. I'm not sure if there have been others. |

Re: Black Phantom?
I know ^_^ I'm graduating this year, actually. But the guy I have in mind to play Erik is only a freshman, so he's got a few years to go
Ooh, I love his suit! |

Another black Piangi: Marcus Desando, South Africa and World Tour.
And while we're at it: A Christine with some Asian genes - wonderful Margaret Ann Gates from the Canadian production: http://theatre-musical.com/phantom/gates.html |

I mentioned DeSando. He's actually from South Africa, right? Margaret Ann Gates is of Korean descent -- I believe she was adopted. |

Oh, I'm sorry - I should have seen that. I only noticed John Whitney. My mistake! But I believe the correct spelling is "Desando" and not "DeSando". That's how they've written it in the South African and World Tour brochures. His name is probably of African and not Latin origin. A tad from his bio: Marcus was born in Mamelodi, Pretoria, into a very musical family. He started singing at the age of 13and joined the PACT Chorus as an ad hoc member in 1987. (.....) For Cape Town Opera he sang in Fidelio, The Consul, Tosca, La Bohème and Enoch. (....) He has just completed a 2 year stint as Old Deuteronomy in the South African World Tour of "Cats". |

I have never liked Piangi's character much, but i have to admit, I absolutely loved John Whitney's voice! I saw him in the tour a few days ago, and I'm seeing it again tomorrow. He just has a really powerful voice, and he didn't let his vibrato completely take over like most of the men who play that role like to do...He was great.... | ||||
