Best Song from Sweeney

What is the best song from Sweeney, not your favorite, but the best.
Sweeney Hyde

I picked Epiphany because it is the show. It is the showstopper that embodies the show to the point of perfection.
Kaiana

I chose Epiphany as well. I think it really is the turning point of the show.
Da_Dark_Dude

one of 3: epiphany, little priest or judges johanna,

i chose epiphany

I was going to pick "A little Priest" , but then I read that we were supposed to pick the best, not our favorite, so I voted for "Epiphany".

I love both Johannas, but I went with the Judge's one, because it's so just so wonderfully dark and disturbing, and I love that.
Salome

my favorite isnt on the list... Todd's Johanna. but Turpuin's Johanna and A Littel Priest are 2 and 3.

Oh, I just love Todd's Johanna! But I think Sweeney Hyde mentioned earlier in this thread that the best song wasn't nessisarily (sp?) our favorite. But I chose 'A Little Priest' because it has the right balance of the darkness of the musical and the humor of it.
Salome

true but i think Todd's Johanna is the best number by far. the lyrics speak so much of why Todd is doing what he is doing..the melody is romantic and brooding and the counterpoints by Johanna,Beggar Woman and Anthony really fleash out the emotions running through the show.

I think the best line in the show comes from the song

"and you'd be beautiful and pale
and look too much like her.
If only angels could prevail
we'd be the way we were".

I love the counterpoints, and I agree, it does say a lot about what Todd is doing, how Antony and Johanna feel and how the Beggar Woman is.

I have to say "Epiphany". Such a great number. My close second favorite, which isn't on the list, is probably "Ladies in their Sensitivities". I just love the end where Johanna, Anthony, Beadle Bamfort and the Judge are all singing. Very beautiful, and the beadle's voice on the original broadway cast is amazing.

I put down 'my friends', but I really can't decide. Sweeney's Johanna or By the Sea are probaly my favorites.

I change my mind (why am I always doing that?); the only song in the world is Epiphany.

How is this song "the show". "A Little Priest" is the show. It is one of the finest songs ever written. EVER.
Matthew

A Little Priest.

It's up there by Someone in a Tree on his best compositions.

Absolutely. It bothers me to no end when Phantom and Wicked fans listen to Sweeney and immediately pick Epiphany as the best song. Gee I wonder why they think that....hmmmm.......could it be cause it has a big belt at the end of it? Rolling Eyes
Salome

Epiphany is wonderful but it builds to "A Little Priest". "Priest" marks the shows climax.

The climax of the first act most certainly but not to the show. That takes place in the scene were Todd and Lovett die, at least it always has been to me.

I wish I could change my vote to A Little Priest now as well...

Umm listen to the recording again. "A Little Priest" is reprised when Sweeney kills Mrs. Lovett.

Yes, along with Poor Thing and The Barber and His Wife. When Salome said that A Little Priest marks the show's climax I initially thought of when the song is sung in whole. In addition that is not called "A Little Priest Reprise" it is usually called "Final Scene", "The Judge's Return", "Final Sequence" or something along those lines. If Salome meant said scene were the duo are killed then of course I agree. However, from her post it sounds like the act one finale song.

A. I never said the song was called "A Little Priest (reprise)". I said the song was reprised, which it is.

B. Did you really think Salome did not know the end of "Sweeney Todd"? She has actually been in the show.

C. The show does mark the shows climax. When Sweeney kills Lovett and you look at your watch and see it's almost 11 or 5 you pretty much know the climax has arrived.
Vice

erg... must decide...

1) A Little Priest
2) Worst Pies in London
3) Epiphany
4) Turpin's Johanna
5) Ballad of Sweeney Todd
