Best Show on Broadway Right Now!!!

Here's sort of an obvious question that I havn't seen a thread on in quite some time. What is the best, or your favorite, show that's on Broadway right now???
jazzygirlsings

It's a three-way tie...

Company, Spring Awakening and (though I haven't seen it yet) Grey Gardens...

Have you seen the show lately, hun? It's pretty stale...LOL!

IMHO, I think it should have done what the musical Fosse did and go out when it was still truly on top and exciting...
Eponine93

What do you define by best show? Best overall production or best overall cast or best overall music/book? There are many shades to the term "best."

I think Les Miserables probably has the best music/story. Materialwise, it's definitely the strongest show on Broadway. The cast isn't that great, though.

As for cast.... probably Grey Gardens or The Drowsy Chaperone.

Overall production, I would probably go with Drowsy. It has a great cast and pretty good (ok, sometimes above average) music.

Good question... Smile

And are you just going for what you've seen, Eponine93? Because Company and Spring Awakening would give Les Mis a run for its money, music/story-wise, IMO! (And yes, I've seen them all.)
Eponine93

I'm going on the fact that I'm a giant Mizzie. That show pretty much defines who I am. For me, in my opinion, it has the best material on Broadway, based on my personal experiences/obsession over it.

Also, I'm 13 and relatively clean-minded, so I would feel really uncomfortable seeing or listening to Spring Awakening. When I'm a few years older I'll definitely give it a try. Also, my mother would have a heart attack if she knew.

The Drowsy Chaperone

Since CHICAGO is still playing, that's my all time favorite. Of all the recent shows, now playing on Broadway, the best is THE DROWSY CHAPERONE.

Company is the best musical on broadway, material wise, currently. no question. even though i loathe the concept of the current revival.

Grey Gardens is the best new show running.

Its a gimmick. and one that gets old fast.

It worked with Sweeney because of the whole Brechtian Quality of the piece ansd thew way its set.

in Company it becomes a gimmick..with Amadeus and Mack and Mabel it becomes embarassing.

I disagree...I thought with Sweeney it was more "gimmicky" than it was with Company...In Company, it adds to Bobby's trapped feelings and when he screams out at the end, you really feel it!

I have yet to see the new Company yet. It's a show I've always loved. I did find the last Sweeny terribly gimmicky - although, as a score thought it was quite beautiful. How is Company in the gimmick dept?

if you found John Doyle's Sweeney to be gimmicky..you will find his Comapny even more gimmicky. too bad there are several wonderful performances in it.

I disagree with salome, but you can see our arguments if you read just above your original post...

I thought Company was a lot LESS gimmicky...

I have tickets to see Company next Wed. Yay!

I actually thought that the instruments worked really well in Sweeney (please don't hit me!), but with this opinion, I was wondering how I'll find Company. I know I'll like (if not love) the show overall, but I'm having a hard time picturing Company with similar staging to Sweeney; it doesn't work in my head.

It's amazingly simple...basically, his friends are staged around him and the instruments add so much to the piece...(Read previous posts, they add to Bobby's anxiety about relationships...)

I thought the instruments added so much to the piece, as opposed to Sweeney, which really felt like it was awkwardly staged because of the instruments...

I would like to see Sunday in the Park With George or A Little Night Music with this style. I also think that Camelot, 1776, and Dear World would be good with it.

NO! enough is enough!

and how would book shows like 1776 and Camelot benefit by it. it would be interfering. especially considering instruments dont look like they did in july 1176 or in 550 a.d.

Back to the topic at hand, I went up to New York in August, and based on what I saw, JERSEY BOYS is the best show there right now. And I know someone may smack me for this, but I thought TARZAN was amazing too.

I also saw SWEENEY, and I think that it, though it was gimmicky, it still worked well. I really wish I could see COMPANY right now, cause the instrument thing seems like it would make perfect sense with the show.

Are you serious about Jersey Boys and Tarzan? (Not asking in a mean way, asking in a curious way). Both shows are complete spectacle/fluff! Not to mention that Jersey Boys isn't even broadway music. What do you think of current shows like Avenue Q?
HortonDoody

I understand that Jersey Boys doesn't have real broadway music, but I am entitled to my opinion, which is this: if you have seen the show, think about it without the music. If the show can stand on it's own without any singing by the characters, then it ranks high in my book. Jersey Boys does that. The show is more of a concert inserted in a straight play. The songs do not add any dramatic action to the play. They just are there, which is what I love about it. The show is about a group, and what does the group do? They perform their songs.

With Tarzan, yes, the show is pretty much all spectacle, but so are most new shows that come out now. For example, Wicked, Spamalot, Les Miserables, Miss Saigon, Cats, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King...The list can go on and on. I just thought it was a good show, and it was one of the best I saw while in New York.
xani

My favourite musical on Broadway now is Wicked. But that differs greatly from what I consider to be the "best" musical on Broadway right now, if that makes sense. Best musical (and this is from the few I have seen...there are a lot of shows I would love to see that look and now fabulous (Spring Awakening) but I couldn't judge them until I saw them...) I would have to go with The Drowsy Chaperone or Avenue Q. I go back and forth as to which is better. I think I've made a decision which is not to decide. They are both incredibly brilliant and hilarious shows in completely different ways. I can't successfully compare them.

I also am probably factoring the casts I saw into my decision. If you asked me of all the productions I have seen who the two over-all bests casts were, I would say Avenue Q and The Drowsy Chaperone. But my Avenue Q cast was the OLC, that's screws me up a tad bit.

Blah, blah, blah.

You're allowed to like the shows! Smile My question was more about if you really thought they were the BEST shows on B-way right now. I loved Hairspray and Lion King, but do I think they're the BEST shows out there in terms of plot, songs, message, etc.? No.

I do agree with you though, that a show has done a great job if you can take just the story and enjoy it just as much. Very Happy

I think Drowsy has a better cast because it's all original cast while Ave Q is all replacements right now. The replacements are great but are about half a centimeter below the level of the original. Except for Minglie Chen, the Christmas Eve understudy. I think she had a much better voice than the original Christmas Eve.

Wicked.
SuperKabob

I'd say the revival of company, but then again I'm biased, as my former voice teacher is playing Peter! Rolling Eyes

I would definately have to say Drowsy Chaperone. The storyline is different and fresh, and the characters are so different from traditional cliche musical theatre roles. also, there is a large amount of fresh new talent in this show, including sutton foster, who is absolutely fantasttttttttttttttttttttttttttic Very Happy !

haha yes i know they're supposed to be cliche. what i was trying to say is that the characters aren't what you think of when you think of theater today..well they are..ahh..but it's not a love story or a story about sex like many musicals today. it's different. ahhhh i can't get out exactly what i am trying to say lol i'll just stop now... but anyways i am seeing this show on sunday! i'll post when i get home to let you all know how it went
