Best Recording?

Having recently purchased the DVD of the Sweeney Conecr with PAtti LuPone and George i Gearn i naturaly fell in love with this musical....well can ou blame me. However i'm now wanting to purchase a cast recording. Which is best pound for pound?

p.s I have trawlled through the forum but cannot find anything that answers this specific question, though it is 3am so i might have missed it!

The obvious answer is the original Broadway cast recording starring Angela Lansbury and Len Cariou.

Yep!

But if you like that one, you may want to eventually get the revival too. Original is much, much better though.
Vice

OBC.
Angela Lansbury is awesome!
Salome

OBC is the best by far..the concert is a close 2nd because Hearn is the finest Sweeney.
Ghost

The OBC is essential, even though the concert album has mostly better vocal performances.

The revival is brilliant in it's intensity and intimacy. A very fresh, new take on the material.
Salome

the revival recording in rather bland.
The REAL Ciaron

The OBC is one of the finest musicak recordings of all time. Lansbury and Cariou are the best in the lead roles. Both won much deserved Tony's. Hearn is a blowhard. Not a good fit for Sweeney at all.

lets not go around on this again..I know you prefer Cariou, you once said that if the Tony for replacement cast member were given in the past Hearn should have won it.
Catherine

I've only heard Hearn, and I think he is brilliant

Really adds a much-needed insanity into Sweeny

Never heard Len... hmm
Sweeney Hyde

The OBC is fantastic. It is more grand with those sweeping, full sounding, chords that just so gracefully slide about.

The revival recording is more simple, but still effective, but in a different way.

Go for the OBC first...then if you want you can eventually get the revival recording. I will say that I like LuPone's voice better than Lansburry's in a few spots...particularily in My Friends.

Not to be too redundant, but here's another vote for the OBCR. And make sure you get the full recording (if possible, of course), not just the highlights! Very Happy

I agree that the revival cast recording is awfully boring... I wouldn't say that it's bad, but just not as interesting as the OBC. One of my friends made the mistake of listening to the revival before the OBC and I can't convince him of how amazing this show is because he hates that recording! But he refuses to listen to the OBC because he actually hates Angela Lansbury. Eek.

I would say listen to the OBC first, and if you like it enough definitely give the revival a listen or two to hear the fresh take on it. I still love Pattie LuPone, even if I love Angela Lansbury more. Laughing

You have Tunick to thank for that.

I like her better in that song too.

But I love both LuPone and Lansbury in the role.

You mean there is a blasphemer among us who doesn't like Angela Lansbury!?! Shocked Shocked Shocked

HE MUST BE STONED!!!

* no offense to your friend or anything, It's just that I really like her, especially as Lovett (Although she was a bit silly in the role for me ), and my first reaction to this comment was "Blasphemy!" but I guess each person is entitled to his/her opinion.*
