Best musical based on comic strips

I'd have to choose "Annie"; it just seemed to be the most natural adaptation to the stage, whereas if you look at the production history for "Doonesbury" and "It's A Bird...", they didn't last that long. Plus (and don't hate me for this) I love the 1982 movie version of "Annie". I don't know why so many people on here dislike it so much; I think it's great, myself! But anyway, what do the rest of you consider to be the best musical based on a comic strip?

None of these shows are in my top 25, but Annie is the best of the bunch followed by YAGMCB.
What Is This Feeling?

YAGMCB got my vote. Annie is a reverent classic, but I kinda like YAGMCB better. Annie is my second choice however.

I chose YAGMCB because it's more fun than Annie imo
And, I've always loved the Peanuts. I'm not familiar with Snoopy though

Hope this helps!

Oh my goodness...most of these are pablum compared to Lil Abner. My guess is that most of you don't know it, or you would certainly pick it.
Patch

You left out Kudzu!

Li'l Abner gets my vote.

Not only is it cute and cartoon-y, it has a lot of political implications in it. The rest of the choices are just family friendly good times. Li'l Abner is both cute and deep.

I'm kinda impartial for Charlie Brown because I was in it.

But it's also an awesome musical!

I'm confused. Usually if I'm in a show, I would like it more compared to other shows that I haven't been in.

Well, it all depends on your experience with the show, really. Chris obviously didn't enjoy the production he was in (or just had to sit through it too many times - been there, done that). If he loved doing the show, he would have probably voted for it. See where I'm going with this? Smile

I voted for Li'l Abner because the score holds up so well. Just listen to
"The Country's in the Very Best of Hands" and see how on target it still is.

"Snoopy" is a very good musical and "It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Superman" is undervalued.

Exactly! I loved it for a while. Then tons of stuff started happening in our drama department and people were causing drama. Then our director changed some parts of the show because he casted people who couldn't sing to well. I was the only one who knew my lines and songs. It was our final dress rehearsal where the cast started to learn their stuff.

He (the director) would also have me come to rehearsals, sit their for 6 hours, and then he wouldn't use me. He would "run out of time". In 6 hours you run out of time? Monkey poo!

And from backstage, I probably saw the show 40 times... ugh...

"Bird...Plane...Superman" opens Oct 14 for a 3 weekend run at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA. It is seldom produced.
It will be at PBK Hall, site of one of the Ford-Carter Presidential debates.

There is also a musical version of Andy Capp.
Berger

My favorite is You're A Good Man Charlie Brown. Then a tie between Annie and Li'l Abner
Salome

Abner by far . its a great musical all round. a wonderful score..a great script..political,satirical and fun all at once.
LittleRedLovesTheater

I voted for Snoopy :]
my school did it last year as a dinner theater & it was so cute!
Monsieur D'Arque

There is a little-known musical version of Calvin and Hobbes. Unfortunately, Bill Watterson insists that Calvin and Hobbes will die with him, so along with no merchandising or t-shirts, he forbids the musical to be produced.
