I never got to see Ethel, but I would definitely say Bernadette was better. I did see Bernadette three times and she was perfect in the role. Plus I'm not a fan of Ethel's voice.

I didn't know Angela Lansbury did gypsy. Quite honestly I just can't see that. haha. Her voice isn't exactly a power-house.

I think a lot of people who's opinion I respect regard her as the definitive Rose.

Are you kidding?? Lansbury is considered the definitive Mama Rose. a Tony and a London theatre award for the role. SOndheim and Laurents and most of the theatre commuty consider her to be the perfect Rose.
her voice certainly is a powerhouse..and even if it wasnt the role requires aot of emotional changes and upheaval. You need to get the original london cast recording. you wont listen to another Gyps half as often again! She is sheer genius.
Peters was the worst Mama Rose I ever saw..vocally not right for it and miscast completely.
Tyne Daly was an amazing Rose (and also won a Tony for her work).
Memran was the original but Lansbury really brought the role to the legendary status it is.
Merm waqs Better than peters..but then again everyone was better than Peters in thisp articular role.

I don't exactly see here as the type to play Ms. Lovett from Sweeney Todd but she is the orginal.

She was amazing as Rose, and if you can't respect that, go put on a Follies head-piece or something.

I respectt he effort she gave. but she was dreadful. the only other role of hers I felt that way about was her weird assed portrayal of Annie Oakley.
she is untouched in ITW,SITPWG,Mack and Mabel and Anyone Can Whistle though.

Hahaha... why yes.... I just wanted to know. Because I didn't like Ethel in it, and I only liked Bernadette Peters' voice in a couple songs. And that final scene. But I feel like an idiot cause I had NO idea that Angela Lansbury was Mama Rose. hahaha....

Peters is better than Merman. Merman was a terrible actress. Peters could act circles around her.
