I could go into long, complicated technical babble here. But I won't. Basically - the term chest is wrong because you never sing with your chest for any kind of singing, no idea who came up with that. But yes, in the UK people tend to call the belt voice chest as well so in that way - it is the same thing.

I think they're different. "Chest voice" is kind of a method of production. (I personally think it's slamming your cords together really tightly and causing them to explode open with air pressure... which is a little exageration but i maintain that it's a pretty violent action.) "Belt" is a style of singing, like legit or jazz or singspeak or what have you. Belt employs chest voice, but there are other stylistic qualities in belting. An opera singer will often employ chest voice, but will never belt.

and you never really use your head for any kind of singing either, so head voice and chest voice are both misleading. Your sound is resonating in your mouth in both methods of production.

Thanks for the info guys, I have had 2 yrs of voice lessons, but never really approched the whole "belting" thing, my teacher just said I have a strong "chest" voice with a high break, I was just wondering if the technique for "belting" was different.
