BASEL

just a quick few lines on my first two shows in Musicaltheater Basel, last sunday.

After many, many years of waiting CATS has returned.

CATS currently plays in the former buidling where Phantom was many, many years ago. I know the building by heart, since I had lived just around the corner for one year.
The sides of the theatre are adorned with two huge (maybe 4 meters tall?) posters, one Grizabella and one huge Munkustrap(Jack). Xingiera and I felt like kicking our buts for not having a ladder and a knife at hand, but eh, some other time Wink
I had seven tickets, 3 afternoons for Xingiera, my honey and me, 4 for the afternoon, for my dad, Xingiera, my honey and me.
Due to recent incidents however we were first forced to give away an evening ticket and finally two afternoon tickets and one more evening ticket. So I ended up inviting my best friends for the show, with a heavy warning of "groupie and crazy fan, mkay?".
The shows themselves were awesome, the actors did a great job, although I have never seen this much technical bloopers in a row.
It started with crackling Microns and the lights not going off from the intermission until Growltigers, a horribly crackling loudspeaker on the left that eventually switched off in the second part, forgetting to switch on a microphone when Jemima does her solo in Memory and a Rumple that mistook left with right in "Addressing a cat" (front row).
My favourit charactere was played by two swings, each time another.
Jack rebaldi IS on the castlist, but according to the cast he may NOT show up in Basel.
With all pure honesty, the Munkus we had were good, yes, also gorgoeus looking

( no, I dont have a Munkustrap focus... yep, will post the whole pic soon, as soon as I cleaned my webspace)
but they were not what i was used to as Munkustraps. Their original roles, Skimble and Plato, were rather obvious.
Other than that we really, really enjoyed it, I had already seen Billy McCaw in Dusseldorf, but seeing it again here in Basel was awesome. Xingiera enjoyed it too, having seen the show last in London she though had lots of difficulties with the german language. We both share the same opinion that CATS is english for us, even if we both are native speaking germans. But you eventually forget the language Wink there is to much to eyeball Smile
It wont be the last show Smile
what made me a pinch nervous was that the show, for a second day AND a sunday, was not as clogged as you'd expect it. So I'll see that I cna change that a bit. Means a financial ruin for me, of course,, but worth it Wink In the meantime I'll give the doorstanders a break, they did recognize me right away in the evening show and called "hey! you're here again?".
The swiss public is not as fond of standing ovations, but if you have the nerves to stand alone in the front rows but eventually everyone (!!!) lifted their butts and stood up. It almost seemed as if the cast was not used to that, their eyes glowed when they saw us all standing.
I am hoping to get in contact with the actors backstage sometime too, I'd like to give them a whole cast of figures again, but for the meantime I think they need time to settle down and find all their light switches *grump* and order their merchandise (yes, they did NOT YET have T-shirts, I believe they will be sent in today)
Anyhow, for the next show (next week?) I'll see that I can hand in a more detailed report and pics of the cast list board.
Also, if you do happen to come and see the show here, please do drop me a line Smile

And no other first cast Munk? Damn it is a long time since we had a first cast munk. The actors of Griabella and Old Deut have changed in avery short time...
Anton is great as Deut, isn't he, Aky?
Akeyla

Yep, Old D was great, and Griz was smashing!
never saw someone sing memory like that, but it was like "boah!".
you could really feel her boiling anger about her passed memories and a burning bitterness of beeing old and alone.
Anyhow, Cets, if you do happen to have even just a weekend free drop me a sms, kay? Smile
(((müsstest nur CATS Billet und bis hier hinfahren können, Rest wie Unterkunft kannste gern bei mir haben Smile (wohne einfach nicht mehr in Basel, aber man kommt recht gut hin Wink) )))

as for the trip report, I will write a new and detailed one after I saw it again, I was just somehow really terribly exhausted to note a lot of details on sunday, and I also decided to give them like a week or so to find the light switches...

Looking at the twins in those pictures, it looks likey they're sloooowly inching back to the browner German designs. Very Happy

Great piccies!

Lovely pictures ! I love the Tour twins, they costumes are gorgeous ! And Marides Lazo is such a cutie as Sillabub. I also love the Misto and Munk make-up. *sigh* too bad I can't attend to any Basel performance... lack of money Crying or Very sad
Tuggers_Babe

Wow that Munk looks absolutley gorgeous, love the costumes and make up.

x Tuggs Babe x
Drumdraper

I think I've fallen for another Munkustrap.
Erikonil

IT really is interesting, I think that the productions are starting to get a little bit away from the London makup designs. If you look at a lot of the face make up, it's starting to get more solid and heavy like the traditional German look.
Spylfyr

Thanks so much for sharing! Those photos are beautiful. Shocked The costumes actually do have quite a few subtle differences from the London style. Electra is quite different, especially in the unitard which looks really cool, Jemima has more brown hatching in the unitard, Plato looks different and more brown-ish and Bombalurina's unitard, gloves and makeup look very much German influenced. Awesome pics!!! Very Happy
mistoff

Wow, love the costumes and make up! Munkustrap and Mistoffelees are especially nice. *steals them*
Ahdeya

whoha! :-D

Thank you for sharing this with us! LOTS of wonderful pictures for us all to oogle and adore! Smile

you cannot learn swiss german, it has no rules Wink
generally if you can speak german you can snatch words, especially spoken swiss german. Written swiss german has its own rules that are up to the writer, and also its own interpretations that are up to the reader Wink *g*
I believe mine is particularely difficult to understand since I spent a year in Basel and I've started to "Baslere", which, spoken "correctly" and fluently may sound like a foreign language... *g* almost like "Graubündnerisch" and "Luzernerisch".
Our "slangs" change from "Kanton" to "Kanton" and occasionally also village and friends you've mixed with. New words get created.
Back last year at my school we had students coming from all corners of our little country, and inbetween painting lessons we would compare how we said said a word and what it meant. As a sample "candy" in swiss german can be : Täfeli, nideli, zältli, gutzi, zückerli, bonbon, chrömli.
