Interesting. I've never heard of this.

Got a demo CD you can send?

I've performed this show as Feargal McFerrin, the comic lead. It stinks.

The writer is an idiot.

The show is very poorly written.

I beg you all, don't touch this show, it needs to die.

Dare to compare...

How does the book of this show compare to the book of Grease, whic is also rather poorly written but yet manages to have countless fans because of the songs in the score?

It kind of seems like 'I Love the 80's' set in musical form... I've never really heard of it before, though. Confused
timmy_boy6

I've seen Back to the 80's three times, and if its done well, its very entertaining. The script is very light/teeny with alot of cliche characters and humour... guarenteed to have a non-music theatre audience entertained due to the music alone! But if you're a person who doesn't mind Fame:The Musical or Footloose and likes to have fun, then you'll like Back to the 80's.

Timmmmmmy Very Happy
what_the_heck013

There aren't enough Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, or Michael Jackson songs for me to like it.
Nudelkopf

I've seen it performed. I'm not a fan of it and I do believe that there are many, many more decent musicals around.

Am I the only one who can't read Psyche's post?

Sorry I was in an Asian Cyber Cafe and the computer kept reverting to Japanese Hiragana Script instead of English. What I said was that Back To The 80's is a very amateur show. The script is very child-like and uninteresting, the story itself is rather uninspired and a lot of the songs are only really there for wow factor. For instance...

"My parents have gone away for the weekend so we can all have a huge party at my place. We'll invite everyone, especially Tiffany,"

"Hey Corey, Michael fogot the directions to your place, how do yuo get there again?"

"Well... If you see a faded sign at the side of the road that says fifteen miles to the love shack..."

All the jokes and characters are taken from other sources, Feargal McFerrin is just the typical eighties nerd with the karate kid mantra thrown in every now and again. Michael is the typical bully, yawn. Corey Jnr is a testimont to every eighties hero ever created. Tiffany is SO cliche as well and there isn't really anything very appealing about the show whatsoever.

I have played in this shwo before, as Feargal McFerrin and have to say I didn't enjoy it at all.

I've always thought that you can't boast about writing a show when you just bought the rights to songs that already exist and threw them in it. I mean, any fool can do that, and really this is just a "Hits of the 80's" CD with some cheesy dialogue between the songs.

In closing...

"Uninspired, Uninteresting and altogether a serious disappointment," Psyches Magazine

Another Forum

Boy, this is a tough crowd!
I had not heard of Back To The 80s before I read this thread, and not sure if it is my kind of musical or not. But, decided to do a Google search on the show.
I came across another forum for the show - you can check it out for yourselves at:
http://www.symphonious.net/2004/05/28/back-to-the-80s

The majority of the comments there seem to be overwhelmingly positive!
Admittedly, these seem to have been written by numerous teenagers who have either seen the show, or been in it.
However, maybe we are all just too old, cynical and critical for our own good?

Is it me or is this like, the ONLY post this person has made.

Sounds like BTT80's is making up fake accounts and posting comments to justify his point.

I don't get whay the hype over Back to the 80's is...

THEY TOOK A BUNCH OF SONGS WRITTEN BY OTHER PEOPLE

THEY TOOK CLICHE CHARACTERS ALREADY MADE UP BY OTHER PEOPLE

THEY PUT CHEESY DIALOGUE FOR OTHER PEOPLE'S CHARACTERS TO SAY BETWEEN OTHER PEOPLE'S SONGS

It's an eighties mix tape with the most pathetically weak attempt at a script shuffled around in between the songs.

This show is ridiculous. There is nothing overly spectacular about what the writer has done.

I really dislike this show.

That is all.

okay first off... I'm a girl... and 2nd... I'm not a fake account. I just really only wanted to defend the musical, because sure there are some cheesy parts, but all i was saying is that its at least fun to be in... and i'm just stating my opinion so if you don't agree that's cool... I just want you to know that I am a real person my name is sarah and i do not appreciate being called a liar. I'm sorry you had a bad experience with the show but that doesn't mean you should ruin it for others who might actually like it or be interested it it.

thanks!

p.s. if BTT80's was making up a fake account he prolly would've been smart enough to make more than one post.

taken UK by storm

I'm in the UK but have never heard of this song cycle. How lazy not to write original songs...

Old fart sings...Bless her beautiful hide, where ever she may be
dum di dum, dum di dum
windscreen

I'm counting 1,2,3

Please someone tell me where this is on in the UK (primary schools don't count) so I can go and throw rotten tomatoes! This is cut and paste theatre, IT IS NOT A MUSICAL!

My musical is free, has 32 beautiful songs, and has an original, heart rending story!!!

Monsieur D'Arque

A word in the defense for a moment- Jukebox musicals can be good, if they're well-put-together and truly have a reason to exist besides the songs (or, well, can stand up with the songs as a cohesive, non-crappy whole). Back to the eighties doesn't. For a good jukebox musical that actually works, check out Jersey Boys (then in 2nd place, Mamma Mia tied with We Will Rock You. No other has been significant- not including ballets like Movin' Out). If you want a good eighties musical, don't worry, the rights to The Wedding Singer will be out soon. And if you want to use all your favorite eighties hits, WRITE YOUR OWN SHOW TO PUT THEM TOGETHER. I'm not saying it'd be good, but from what I've seen of Back To The Eighties, it'd be better than that.

I consider myself something of an expert, since I've written a jukebox musical and have been complimented on the overall quality of the script.
JoeOfTheAmazingMusical

I'm just going to start practicing Back to the 80's for a perfomance this summer, and i must say, after reading this, I'm not filled with confidence. However, the musical does seem to be the kind of thing my theatre group will enjoy to do. We did a read-through of the first five scenes only yesterday, and most people had fun simply sitting and reading. So far, we have only done Fame the Musical, and this seems similar, but if it isn't, a head's up would be nice.

P.S. I'm not a fake account, i've only just signed up simply to post this. Please don't make any false accusations.
Wavy Blue

What, no Beat It? No Take On Me? No Let's Get Physical? This show could be so much more awesome. Sigh. And I am such a huge fan of the 80s.
theatre_grl

I've never heard of it before and I'm sure it's not great.
but I'm auditioning for it next week--that's how few theatre oppurtunities are in my area *sigh*
I talked to the music director and she said they didn't really want to put it on, but the set stuff would be cheap.

For those who know the show--the music director (my voice teacher) said she had me in mind for the girl who sings Material Girl
I know nothing about the show; Does anyone have any song ideas I could use for my audition other than singing Material Girl?
That would be a big help.
pysk

that's the point

the point of the whole play is to be very cliche and have "typical" 80's characters in, to remind people of the movies from the 80's.

No Let's Get Physical?

there is a mention to this song in the script, in a letter to Eileen. It's small, but if you know the song you'll catch it.

A local school is doing this. They say it rocks.

I am not impressed by what I know of the show, though.
