Back from Rotterdam

Hi all,

I don't have time enough to write a complete trip report, but I saw Cats in Rotterdam and it was great ! A few quick memories :
Mark John Richardson, amazing Mistoffelees, and Daymon Montaigne Jones, always lovely as Tumblebrutus.
Disappointing Grizabella, with a weird interpretation of the character. I did not see sadness or dispair, it did not seem painful to her to try to imitate the dancing of the other cats at the beginning of Memory (end of act one).
The Jellicle Ball : what an energy of the cast ! Loved it.

Lovely lightenings all through the show, maybe too much use of the "stars spots" during Mistoffelee's dance solo. But... I fell in love with what they've done. I prefer this lightening than the one from London.

Stage door : I was the only one waiting there, it was quit surprising... I get in catching Veerle Casteleyn even if she was not on stage that day ^^ made me so happy. She's a really nice woman, who took a few minutes to discuss with me.

So that's all for now, I'll be back later with a complete report ^^

If I'm seeing the show Saturday evening, think they'll come out, or think they'll be partying? I really wanna meet the cast.... Anyway, can't wait to hear your review of the show!

I saw CATS on the evening of the 29th of October.

We sat a little too far from the stage in my opinion, first balcony, a few seats to the back, while those were first range priced tickets, which seemed unfair to me.

Weak points:
- Audio/Singing: I couldn't understand most of the chorus bits, especially during the opening song, I couldn't make out what they were saying.

Actually, about 1/4 into the show, I decided to give up on listening to the (sometimes dreadful) Dutch lyrics and focus on the dancing and acting. (Which was delightful).

- 'Memory' was a bit dissapointing and I can agree with the opinions about Anita's acting. She has a nice and fitting voice for the character though. She just didn't seem comfortable with the character. She wasn't Grisabella.

- No Etcetera

- Growltiger's Last Stand kept going on and on...

Good points:
- Jemima had a lovely voice and it hardly bothered me that she was black.
- The dancing was phenominal altough not always perfectly timed... Also the girl playing Victoria didn't seem to be the best dancer.
- Acting was nice, I laughed quite a bit.

I enjoyed myself and I enjoyed watching the "cats" (especially their interaction while they were not the focus of that particular number/scene), but I couldn't help thinking: I could have as well watched the video and I would have missed nothing.

Overal score:
7/10

I would never watch the video again if it was a choice between seeing the show "live" instead of over and over again on a TV screen with no other interpretations...

Thanks for the opinions!

Fantine Arrow It is interesting to hear that you as a Dutch didn't understand what were they singing Rolling Eyes Maybe I had the advance that I don't understand anything in spoken Dutch and so I could concentrate on "meaningless" singing and dancing Cool

Fantine, did you get to see Veerle on-stage?

Veel Liefs,

No, I don't think that she was on that night.
