Avenue Q

does anyone know any of the cast list for the west end show?
my mun said that some of it had be announced but i cant find it :S
TheNextTenMinutes

Didn't want to start a whole new topic relating to Avenue Q and was wondering if this could just be a general Av. Q thread?
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knows about the lyrics in "Purpose", specifically:

"Could it be? Yes it could,
Something's coming,
something good."

Does anyone know if this is a nod to West Side Story or was it just an accident? Has anyone read any interviews that hold the answers?

Yes, it was a nod to WSS. It also eventually cost them $20,000.

Seriously ? for those lines ?

That's crazy!

Funny, I heard the Avenue Q song before I heard WSS, and I felt so cheated when I realized that the lyrics were the same! (Naturally, I knew that WSS came first, so I felt cheated by the writers of AQ). But I didn't know that it was on purpose, and I had no idea that they had to pay $20,000 for it... Were they sued, or what? Interesting. Eh?
RemedialSweetSap

Not exactly sued, but just paying royalties. I want to say it had something to do about publishing the music. It was okay for the first set of publications, but when they had to produce more and went back for more permission, they were told to pay up.

There is no soundtrack.

Then what I have I been listening to? Are you just being a little pedantic at the fact that CYTthespian did not use the words cast recording? i'm normally quite pedantic myself about that sort of thing so I can understand where you are coming from if you are Very Happy

Possibly.

I've only heard one of the songs from Avenue Q: "The Internet Is For Porn". It sounds very...unique. I hope it goes on tour sometime!
Celeste_SM

I really enjoyed the production of this show in Vegas, but I unfortunately saw it after they cut it down to meet the Vegas audience requirement for short shows. Sad

Interesting about WSS royalties. I had no idea! I guess Urinetown was more subtle so that such a thing wasn't required.

I knew they were lines from WSS, but didn't realise they had to pay royalties for it! That's a very expensive lyric!!
katieanne

compared to all the money they made off that show, $20,000 is chump change.

Good point actually!! I didn't think of that!
AvenueQfan

This was a really awesome show I loved every second of it hence my screen name.
LesWickedPhantom

anyone know how the new Gary Coleman is?

I've already seen the show twice with the original, so I doubt I'll be back in the near future to find out for myself.

and anyone know who'll be replacing Barrett Foa when he leaves in July?

I'd really like to see the West End version. Some changes were made to suit the British audience. For one, I heard that when Rod announces he's gay, the American version greets it with silence while the British verision has applause. Don't know why they changed it. The American way just adds another laugh to the show. I disagree with the Meersman's assessment that "the book is at times preachy and sentimental". It has some sentimental moments but I think it fits. Between the laughter and sentiment, the show makes you feel more...human...and I like shows that can do that. I was concerned that Avenue Q would be preachy but it didn't come across to me like that. I thought the show's conclusions were more realistic than preaching idealism.

Now, up until reading all the lukewarm reviews in the London press, I'd have been with you 100%. But I must admit that I'm wondering whether the London production doesn't come off more sentimentally that the Broadway production....

A random sampling of the London reviews:

The Telegraph: Stuck in a cul-de-sac of cuteness
The Times: First Night Review
The Independent: Muppet-style puppets and humans tackle life's most vexing issues

Honestly, I wasn't extremely fond of the new Gary Coleman - She doesn't get a lot of the jokes through very well. Mediocre.

on thre other hand Howie Michael Smith (who replaced Barrett Foa) was fantastic. I liked him performance. (but was still dissapointed that I missed Barrett lol)

and now to shwo you my prized possesion - ME and Rick Lyon lol

Pardon my ignorance, but is there a book?

Edit: This needs elaboration. I thought it was here, but on one forum or another (actually, I cannot remember where on earth I read this. Maybe I made it up) people appeared to be comparing the show Avenue Q to the book. I have never heard of one, but then again I am one of the only people I know who even knows what Avenue Q is, so...
piscesmoni

This is basically an original musical, but is coined as an adult version of Sesame Street.
xani

I saw Avenue Q in London the night before opening night, and it was amazing. Probably the best cast I have ever seen...and you didn't doubt for the second that they were enjoying every moment of the show. I don't know what all the mediocre reviews were about...I read the Times one while I was in London, and it simply confused me...I didn't really get the feeling the reviewer knew what he was talking about. Meh. My point is, the London show was fantabulous, and I hope it has a long life.

Seasame Street on acid Wink

I loved - heard the soundtrack and when it came to London I had to go. Admittedly the songs aren't all that strong - the lyrics stand out more than anything else - you're not gonna forget "everyone's a little bit racist" and "the internet is for porn" very easily Razz "There's a fine, fine line" is the only song that I think I'd class as more traditionally musical.
I thought the puppet work was fantastic on this - if you haven't seen any pictures (where have you been?!?!) you'll see that you clearly see the actors and the puppets. I think there's only about 6 humans on stage at one time and most will be animating puppets - sometimes more than one at a time. They animate the puppet to sing etc, but also act the part themselves, physically and facially - in a way this makes it more, well, believable. I bet it takes a fair bit of skill, because there's more than once during the show that one actor will be animating more than one puppet, giving there voice to one, while also having to give there voice to a puppet they're not even animating! It sounds confusing - I couldn't do it in a month of sundays! But it is fantastic to watch - nevermind hilarious Wink

Go see it!!

Oh...that's too bad! We saw it in Vegas too, but it was the full-length version. The audience was also 1/2 empty, which I thought was odd...but really, the Wynn didn't advertise the show that well....
Kate_Monster

I've seen the London version, it's AMAZING!
The cast are brilliant, particularly Simon Lipkin and Julie Atherton.
And those songs! Brilliance in the extreme.... Laughing
Eponine93

Does anyone know how the current cast is doing? I'm going to see it sometime after Christmas on Broadway (shh... I'm not supposed to know my dad got tickets) and I want to know what to expect. Also, how do I tell my father to expect without him ripping up our tickets?
Luvz2sing247

I'm not sure how they're doing, but my high school director, Robert McClure, is playing Nicky and Trekkie Monster. I was sad that he couldn't direct this year, but i'm realy happy he got the part.

Has anybody seen him? I posted this in another topic, cause i didn't see the Avenue Q one, but I want to know how he's doing

Avenue Q - Rob McClure

The Broadway cast is doing great. Sold out shows (even on the holiday). Don't think they could better - they're doing GREAT.

Robert McClure is doing fantastic in the part and by all accounts "the one to watch". He also appeared with "Nicky" on the morning news show "Good Day New York" on 12/7. (And PS, no doubt he'll miss directing the high school play as well)

Eponine93: best thing to tell your father is it's a sort of Muppets mets South Park....extremely funny, but somewhat risque and definitely politically incorrect.
medeanurse

Last year my choir teacher gave me a burned CD ( ::gasp:: ) of Avenue Q. I must say that I was hooked from the moment I heard a few of the songs. This would be a fun musical to see!

i saw avenue q in the west end on friday it was amazing such a funny show and the performers were great
Eponine93

Well, I saw it and I absolutely loved it! I thought the cast was excellent. However, before I review let me tell you my playbill is not in the same town as me right now and I'm probably going to butcher the spelling of the actor's names, but I'll try to give a complete and comprehensive review of it.

Howie Michael Smith (Princeton/Rod)- I happened to really enjoy his performance, but I think about half of it had to do with the fact I found him an extremely attractive man. I'm shallow, I know. Laughing He had a nice voice, good acting skills and moved the puppets well. Though I prefer John Tartaglia, he did a good job.

Mary Faber (Kate/Lucy)- She did wonderful! Though she's a petite girl, she had an extremely powerful voice. She was moving as Kate, especially during "Everybody's A Little Bit Racist" and "A Fine, Fine Line" and managed to keep Kate and Lucy's singing voices completely different, something Stephanie D'Abruzzo seemed to struggle with a little bit. She gets kudos for doing great dialogues between the two characters she played.

Minglie Chen (Christmas Eve)- She was an understudy, so I wasn't expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised by her talent. Her voice was more powerful than Ann Harada and I personally liked her a lot better. Definitely my favorite actress in the entire show.

Robert McClure (Trekkie/Nicky)- Luvz2sing247, he's doing great. I personally like Rick Lyon better but he definitely comes close. I noticed some of his work as Trekkie seemed to be imitation of Rick Lyon's, but he did a good imitation. He did fantastic as Nicky, new and exciting.

Haneefah Wood (Gary Coleman)- I'm undecided on her. I believe she did as good as she could at the role, but had too high of a voice to be Gary. In a way, that made the reference funnier. However, she definitely struggled on the lower notes in "Shadenfruede" (sp?)

Evan Harringington (Brian)- I also am having trouble deciding whether he was good or just ok. Brian has never been my favorite character and I've never really paid attention to him on my CD, so I'm unsure whether to judge him or not. I think the actor seemed rather bored in the role, though he obviously was talented.

I just want to say that my dad really enjoyed it as well. Which is weird because my father had been dragged to see about half of all musicals ever produced and hates them all.
milkywhite24601

Glad you liked it Eponine93!!!!!
I want to see this SOOO badly, however there is no way my parents would take me, considering anti-innapropriate shows (with exceptions) and are very fond of Sesame Street (not like they sit around watching it or anything-lol) and think it's mean what they did to the characters. In my oppinion, yea I love Sesame Street too but who cares??? It's still awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And the songs are so so so so great-I want to see it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But NOOO...lol I'll stop complaining now. lol

Avenue Q is one of the funniest things I've ever seen in the theatre, second only to Noises Off - but I think non-theatre people may well find Avenue Q funnier! I saw it in London, not long after it opened, and then a few months later in New York, and I don't remember it being too different. I had the bonus of seeing Ann Harada as Christmas Eve in London, and I did think she was better than the girl who played it in New York (no idea of her name!). I have a sneaky feeling that the theatre company I work for has their eye on it for a potential future show (and may well get the rights - being in New Zealand does sometimes have its advantages!) and I'll fight to the death to stage manage it!
Milleh

So it is worth seeing then ? Very Happy

Me and my mate are planning on going in the summer to see it. We've heard all the music and love it all! I can't get "It sucks to be me" out of my head.

We saw like a sneaky preview on the Royal Variety Performance and it was fantastic! Truly talented people
Eponine93

Definitely, go see it. You won't regret it.
flying_pigs

I saw it last night! It was FANTASTIC! Go see it!
Milleh

Ooooooooh can't wait Very Happy

What would any of you say is your fave song from it?

It covers alot of issues to do with real life which is really good. Plus using puppets where you can see the actors will keep the audience visually interested along with the catchy tunes Very Happy
Pounce

My two favorite songs from the show are

"There's a Fine, Fine Line"
and
"I Wish I Could Go Back to College"

Although I'll admit that the songs sound similar.

Pretty solid show from beginning to end.
KittyCat

I'm going to see it on 3rd March! very excited! can't wait! Very Happy xxx
Eponine93

Hmm... crap, I love all the songs.

Of course, me being me, I like the serious songs best. I really like "Fine, Fine Line," "I Wish I Could Go Back To College," and "For Now" because the lyrics are solid and pretty good but the melodies are good too. "It Sucks To Be Me" and "Everyone's A Little Bit Racist" have much better lyrics and "The Internet is For Porn" and "My Girlfriend Who Lives in Canada" are funnier, but their melodies leave something lacking.

Overall though, my favorite song is "Fantasies Come True." I'm such a freak... no one I know likes that song. I don't know what's so great about it, it's just so romantic, funny (you look like David Hasselhoff), has a good melody and is both hilarious and sad at the same time.

That's what I love about Avenue Q. It's funny but serious at the same time.
Emmanya

I love "Fantasies come True"! I'm such a Rod/Nicky shipper!

I love the London cast. I guess a lot of you have seen the Lurrrvefest youtube clips - so class!

Hi,

I'm booking tickets for Avenue Q in London and can get seats in Row B in the Stalls. Is it worth being that close to the stage. Whats the view like? Does anyone know?

I really want to see Avenue Q. I've heard a couple of the songs on MySpace ("Everyone's A Little Bit Racist," "The Internet is for Porn," and "It Sucks To Be Me," although I'm sure I'm forgetting at least one) and they're all great. I also saw this Wicked/Avenue Q fusion on YouTube. It was Katie and Trekkie Monster singing "Popular" form Wicked. It's pretty funny, you can try and find it if you want.

Seriously?

I've watched some clips on youtube of Avenue Q performed by some amateur community theaters, WITHOUT the puppets, and it actually works pretty well. What do you guys think about AQ without puppets?

It defeats the idea of it being a kiddie show dealing with adult themes. Avenue Q is supposed a twist on Sesame Street. The presence of the puppets reinforces that notion.
