Avenue Q School Edition?

According to a press release I just recieved from MTI, they have been granted the release of rights for Avenue Q. Apperently they are going to release 2 versions, the full-length version, and a school edition. Is it just me or does a school edition of this show sound goofy? If they cut down the show due to content and language, there would be almost no show left. How is this going to be done, and done well??

COMING SOON FROM MTI:
AVENUE Q and AVENUE Q School Edition
Sign up for Fast-Track notification for AVENUE Q or AVENUE Q School Edition and you'll be first to know when these new titles are available for licensing.

Dear Friend of MTI:

We’re delighted to announce that MTI has acquired the rights to represent the exciting and edgy hit musical AVENUE Q! While it is not available for general release at this time, we wanted you to know that in conjunction with the authors, the plan is to release two versions of the show: AVENUE Q School Edition (suitable for High Schools to perform, with any material that might be deemed “questionable” for a general audience altered or removed) and the full version of AVENUE Q, with variations for sections/songs/lyrics that will allow a production to retain as much of the original as possible, but be flexible to allow theatres to amend it within author-approved guidelines for various community standards.

We have set up two special FAST TRACK notification pages for these versions of AVENUE Q. We also have included a text field where you can make any comments or give us your thoughts about how you think AVENUE Q will work in your theatre. We look forward to hearing from you!

Your friends at MTI!

Shocked

They're releasing any musicals nowadys, jusat to bump up the money.
MsDivaKate

Exactly!

Its like the school edition of Rent that is released, if you cut all the inappropriate material that, in the words of the email "might be deemed “questionable” for a general audience " from Avenue Q you'd be left with Fine Fine Line, Mix Tape, and like, For Now lol

Its just ridiculous but MTI really is just out to make money and know schools will jump on these shows, whether or not they are actually vocally appropriate for high schoolers or content appropriate without completely altering the entire feel of the show.

Just seeing this topic made me feel...ugh - how would the story actually be strung together? Wait til they're old enough to do the proper version d'oh!
Luc

A clean version of Avenue Q, eh??

Sesame Street, anyone?
wicked_boy

All they will be left with is a few puppets stuck together singing:

"On Avenue Q, we live on Anver Q."

If they cut all the rude bits out.

Exaclty. As much as some high schoolers might love a certain show, they need to understand that its just not reasonable for a show of that type to be put on in a school, due to the school district needing to be mindful of the different types of individuals in the school district who may be offended or opposed to certain material.
But then again, with almost any show you'll find a parent or group who is opposed to something. For example, a boy in our production of Bye Bye Birdie who happened to come from a very relgious family (they may have been Jehovah's Witnesses I think) and who was an amazing dancer was made to drop out of the show because his parents felt it "promoted sex" and they "didn't like all the dancing."

However that's more of an isolated incident then the fire that would come from a school doing a show such as Rent, Cabaret or AVenue Q for many many reasons. I know some of the strict Baptists in our area (particularly from the church directly across the street from our highschool) would have a field day if the school district approved Rent OR Avenue Q for the students.

Someone posted about this on my anti Broadway Jr. Facebook group. (http://hs.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2228453444)

Seriously, they will release anything now. Blahh.

It shouldn't be released, and the same goes for RENT.
If they release either, they should only release full versions, with no cuts.

What????

Ok, EVERYTHING about Avenue Q is completely innapropriate for schools. With RENT there is a few things that could stay even though it is still innapropriate, however the entire CONCEPT of AQ is innapropriate!

The synopsis of the show is puppets who swear, have sex, and do political sattire to music. No way is that ever appropriate for schools. If they took all that away, it would just be the muppet show for christ sake!

I know!!

Seriously. Think about this, people:
"Hey, let's make an adult version of Sesame Street!"
"Yeah, sure!"
----later-----
"Since this is such a success, let's take this adult take on a children's show and make it suitable for children!"

Wouldn't that just bring you back to square one?

BREAKING NEWS! There are liberal schools that let you sing about porn and racism and not wearing underwear today and schadenfreude... I'm actually very excited about this. My school's drama club put on a very much so elaborately and fully staged "concert" production with many (or all) of the lines left in...

I think the school version might only censor out some four lettered words and such. Nothing much.
MsDivaKate

Those liberal schools, are far and few.

So the school edition could be designed in two different ways: one with minimal editing to cater to those few liberal districts out there where parents won't write letters after seeing a show like Avenue Q done by their students. However less schools likely to do it, means less money.
Two: A major clean up of the show to appeal to the masses to bring in major money from the loads of schools to rush doing it.
Monsieur D'Arque

From what I've seen and heard, there are scads of alternate or deleted pieces to Avenue Q, from its days as a television pilot, to deleted songs, to promotional singles. I'm betting maybe some of these will show up in the "clean version."
