Auditions...

So, auditions for Anything Goes at my high school are in January.
And I'm wondering.

How well do Evelyn and Moony have to be able to sing and how much is character. I can do the character part, an i'm an okay, but not amazing singer.

In the production I was in our Mooney was an OK singer... he could carry a tune, and manage harmonizing (Friendship) and all, but wasn't anything super.
Our Evelyn had a wonderful voice but really didn't use it because of his characterization.
So, in answer to your question, I think the characterization is more important than the vocal quality of these roles.

I think Evelyn needs to be a good singer, he has a more proper character and his personality should play off in his singing. However it's not essencial for Moony to have a good voice. He is mopre of a comedic character and a different type of voice fits him well. Don't get me wrong he has to be able to carry a tune, he can't be completly tone deaf, but him two main songs, Friendship, and Bludbird are meant to be funny, and our Moony, who does have a good voice made himself sound bad in Bluebird, and if you have a strong Reno she can carry Friendship. In my opinion Moony is a better character anyways, more interesting, and funnier.

Our Moon was completely 100% tone deaf, but he was a great actor and very very funny. Seriously. Bluebird was everyone's favorite song. And our Evelyn was... well, not as musically challenged as Moony. And he worked hard. By the end, he only went off once or twice during Misbehave. And he was very British and spoke a lot of the song, so you couldn't even tell.
So, yeah. It really depends on how well you can act.
