Auditions SoonI have three auditions coming up. One is for Grease at a local theater. I am going to be the youngest in a group of people ages 13 to 18. The most I could get is probably ensemble, which is fine. I was thinking of auditioning with Tracy's part in the beginning of "You Can't Stop the Beat".
Another audition I have is for Bye Bye Birdie at my school. I am going to be an eighth grader and senior of my middle school. I am hoping to play Kim McAfee. I am a mezzo-soprano belter but I can do very high soprano too. I was thinking of singing "Hopelessly Devoted to You" from Grease because I am relating Kim to Sandy a bit.
The other audition is for Annie at the same community theater as Grease but it's a main stage production. I am really hoping to play Annie but if not I want to play an orphan. I am auditioning with "Put On a Happy Face" from Bye Bye Birdie.
Do you think my choices are good?

Hm... I like the idea. But if you are going for the role of Annie, you should really try to show off your belting... if you can belt. Perhaps "Johnny One Note" or "Shy", but they tend to be overdone.

I'm doing it a few keys higher.

I have already auditioned with Shy at this theater and I did Johnny One Note in a recital there so they have heard it before.

I found out for the community theater's Annie I need to sing a song from the show as well as a song of choice.
Would "Tomorrow" be a bad choice? I belt it pretty well but I don't know if it would be too risky.

I think Maybe would be a better choice ... its a little higher range, and you can do a little more acting with it. And it won't drive directors as crazy as Tomorrow.
Good luck.
I really liked the idea of Put on a Happy Face though, too bad.

you could also do "never fully dressed without a smile" from annie. that one isn't heard a lot.
it might mix things up a bit. i'm sure they'll hear about a billion girls singing "Tomorrow" and who knows you could be the only one who sings that song and they might like it and remember you.

Thanks for the comment. I'm considering "Maybe" now because it could show off my soprano voice as Put on a Happy Face shows off my belting.
I still get to sing it, they just want to hear an additional song from the show.

That is a good idea! I'm going to look into it. I have a little while to decide but I don't think I'm going to sing Tomorrow anymore.

I wouldn't sing Tomorrow because dozens of girls will probably sing it and unless you know you're better then all of them, the people conducting the audition might zone out a bit.
Of the 3, Maybe is probably the best choice as You're Neve Fully Dressed tends to get a little boring to listen to. Maybe would probably give you the most options, as you pointed out, to display range and acting abilities.
However anything from Annie tends to get really overdone. Do you mind if I ask how old you are? You don't want to sound TOO young in an audition.

I am 13. I decided to sing "Maybe" to show off my higher register, or whatever it's called.

I think that will definitely work. And you're still young enough to have that song work for you. Good luck.

Thank you! It's going to be hard because it's a mainstage production and there will probably be millions of girls who are like 9-14 trying out. But hopefully I've got a chance. And if not, I'd be thrilled to be an orphan or ensemble! I'll post how it all goes.
