Auditions Rapidly Approaching!Hey y'all. K, a lil background: I'm 15, and the local youth theatre troupe is putting on "My Fair Lady" this summer. Auditions will consist of one musical performance. I'm going for Higgins...Any ideas for audition songs? Here are a few of my ideas:
*I've Grown Accustomed to her Face
*The Impossible Dream
*Your Song
*A Hymn to Him
Anyway, I'm really looking for something that will fully express the character and all of his emotions ("Accustomed" being a prime example) as well as something that shows off range (i.e. "The Impossible Dream"). Which is the lesser of two evils, acting or voice. (I'm really new to this, so I need all the help I can get...lol!

one more thing...Do y'all know any websites that more or less "analyze" this play? Mind you, I have a very deep appreciation and understanding for the play in general, and the Higgins character in particular, but any extra, outside insight always helps!

I'll just remind you that Higgins is mainly a speak-singing role. He rarely sings...he may drop in a few notes here and there, but mostly it's just speaking in rhythm. Know what I mean? Listen to Rex Harrison on one of the recordings; he's the one who started the whole speak-singing thing. If you want, I'll send a few mp3's.
Anyway, my point is, don't worry about the range bit. Don't even worry about singing! Concentrate on the acting...I'd suggest going with one of Higgins' songs.

To anaylze the play read Pygmalion, but I wouldn't do "Your Song" because Higgins would NEVER openly remark his love for Eliza. (to anyone else, to himself, yes)

Thanks!K, getting a little more confident now. Thank y'all so much! My only lil qualm is that if I do a Higgins-specific audition and don't get cast (god forbid), then they'd have nothing else to go on for say Freddy or Alfred (which are definitely within my grasp, so to speak). Anyway, thanks again for all the advice...I'm prob gonna go with "Accustomed to Her Face".

If you are going to do that for your audition, just be cautious. Speak-singing can be very difficult to balance out, so be sure you can keep the feel and the rythym and the melody going with your voice. And there's no rule that says you can't just pure sing the whole song with a few hints of speaking sprinkled in. In fact, the only reason why Rex Harrison did it originally was because he coundn't sing well enough in his own estimation, despite voice lessons. The way it come out in the OBC and OLC productions, and all of his productions is very good, but that come with lots of practise. Best of Luck!

Spongey, from my experience, they probably DON"T want to here a song from the show at the original audition. This is a common mistake that says to the Director "maybe WE think we should get this part" and we don't want to send that message. I would sing one of your other songs that may be a little talky. Then be prepared to knock their socks off when they ASK you to sing "Accustomed" at the Callback auditons. Above all relax and have fun. Break multiple limbs in all you do!

THANKS!!!Thanks to all for the support...auditions are this weekend. Just tryin not to think about it, but still be prepared. (It's like I'm anal and oblivious at the same time...lol). And dramadude...amen on Adams...what a role...def one of the more overlooked parts in musical theatre...egad, off topic!
Anyways, I'm really hoping I get it, as I feel I have so much to offer to this role (I guess everyone says that, but I really think I do!) I'm prob sounding all cliche` and stuff, so I'll shut up now! (Every forum reader takes deep sigh of releif) Will check back after auditions!

It's good when auditions go well! Just a friendly warning: over-confidence is not a good thing (I'm speaking in general terms, though).
