Auditions in Long Island: The Secret Gospel of Saint MarkHey, Superstar FansIf you live in Long Island and like Jesus Christ Superstar, Godspell, Hair, Blood Brothers, Man of La Mancha, Pippin and the like, you may be interested in this. Fluxedo Arts, LLC is casting The Secret Gospel of Saint Mark at Author's Playhouse in Bayshore, NY on Monday, January 16. Evening rehearsals will begin immediately, with evening performances scheduled for weekends throughout March at Author’s Playhouse. The work, adapted from the Gospel of Mark and other ancient texts, is an original neo-medieval folk-opera for an all-male cast. This edgy new musical depicts a troupe of players who re-enact the Passion from a historical perspective, revealing first-century Christian mythmaking and unjust hostility toward Jews in the writing of the first Gospel. There are seven principal characters who must act and sing very well: TRUTH (20-35) portrays Jesus of Nazareth as depicted in the Gospel of Mark. Full or partial nudity is required for this role during the scourging, the carrying of the cross and the crucifixion. COURAGE (20-35) portrays Peter, Barabbas & Simon of Cyrene. FAITH (18-35) portrays Mary of Magdala & the Syrian Woman. MIGHT (25-40) portrays Prefect Pontius Pilate, James & the Roman historian Tacitus. WEALTH (25-40) portrays High Priest Joseph Caiaphas, John, Joseph of Arimathea & the Jewish historian Josephus. LEGACY (25-40) is the principal Narrator and portrays Miriam, Jesus' mother. MYSTERY (15-20) portrays various enigmatic Young Men from the Gospel of Mark. Full or partial nudity is required for this role throughout the play. Additional male singers are also needed to appear as Roman Soldiers, Disciples, Pharisees, Weeping Women, etc. The music for this play is mostly in a folk-rock style with some medieval-sounding accents, similar to Godspell (“Save The People,” “All Good Gifts,” “By My Side”), Children of Eden (“The Wasteland,” “Lost In The Wilderness,” “Stranger To the Rain”), Evita (“Oh What A Circus,” “High Flying Adored” “She Is A Diamond”) and Hair (“Easy To Be Hard,” “Frank Mills,” “Flesh Failures”). If you enjoy these shows, and others such as Pippin, Man of La Mancha, Les Miserables, Blood Brothers, Joseph…Dreamcoat and Jesus Christ Superstar, you will also enjoy The Secret Gospel of Saint Mark. The song titles are as follows: “Blood On Our Hands/How Long?” Barabbas “This Is Roman Order” Jesus “How Long?” (Reprise) Barabbas & Jesus “He Has Anointed Me” Jesus “How Long?” (Reprise) Barabbas “When I Call” Miriam “Jerusalem” Jesus “Worthy of Love” Mary of Magdala “Hosanna” Ensemble “I Offer My Life” Jesus & Barabbas “We Forsake Him!” Caiaphas & Mob “The People Will Decide” Mob “I Await” Barabbas “The People Will Decide” (Reprise) Mob “This Is Roman Order” (Reprise) Barabbas “All Morning Long” Weeping Women “Beyond Gennath Gate” John & James “Temptation” Pharisees “Why Have You Abandoned Me?” Ensemble “Look Up” Peter “You Will Live On” Mary of Magdala All performers are asked to audition with a contemporary theater-related song with Karaoke accompaniment. The songs mentioned above, or similar songs from the other shows mentioned above would be excellent choices. Q & A: Is this a challenging or controversial play? Yes, very much so to traditionalists and/or fundamentalists. Is this a religious play? Perhaps, perhaps not, it depends on the individual experiencing the play. Is this an offensive or sacrilegious play? It is absolutely not intended to be.
