Auditions for some UK universities - a few questionsJust posting this to see im these sound ok, i just want some opinions and feedback.
i am an 18 year old baritone, 6foot1 about 12 stone and would most likely be cast as romantic characters due to my physical appearance, but i and my acting coach feel my strengths lie in comedy and villainous roles.
For songs - stipulated that songs must be from musical theatre repetoire and contrasting (pretty standard really), i chose "i need to know" from jekyll and hyde, which is a very dramatic ballad and is very effective to act out, it is high and shows off my upper register, which i feel is my strongest register, so no real problems there, it is 1994 frank wildhorn.
to contrast i chose cole porter's "too darn hot" this song not only contrasts in style and content, but in period, which i feel is a good move, its very jazzy and i get to show off a warm tone on it and prepare a very character based performance which is choreographed as cool and slick. although simple and jazzy it is still rangey with almost 2 octaves required to sing it.
i think these are good, sound choices, any objections/alterations u can think of?
for monologues: it is stipulated that monologues must be age appropriate - one by shakespeare, the other being post 1956. for my shakespearean monologue i looked at both Romeo and Juliet and to Much ado about nothing, i chose the extracts as romeo takes the vial and dies towards the end of the story and in MAAN i chose the extract when Claudio reveals his wife from act IV scene 1. which, if any should i consider?
to contrast it with modern i wanted to chose a comedy, i chose dark comedy 1960's peice "who's afraid of virginia woolf?" the extract where george explains to his wife and the whole group while drunk about cloning and his fear that Nick is practising this dangerous art and will use it to take over the world.
i am open to suggestions for both monologues, but i found it hard to get a good shakespearean age appropriate monologue, i looked at florizel in winter's tale also, but i think that his monologue is bland in comparision, the niggling thing in my head is quality of monologue v overdone monologues and any help is appreciated.
as for the dance audition, there is a jazz workshop i have to participate in, which should be fine as i take jazz lessons. hopefully lol.
thanks again, any help is appreciated.

I think you have some good choices in there. While I think most of Wildhorn (maybe with the exception of 'Civil War' is a bit overdone, if it sounds & feels good, then go for it.
Good contrast with Too Darn hot.
My only concern is that if you are going for a 'comedic side', as you state it, you might want to try something lighter than 'Virginia Woolf'. All of your others (Too Darn Hot being the exception) are a bit darker, so maybe something more overtly funny/comical?

Also, if the stipulation is that the monologue needs to be age appropriate, George absolutely isn't age appropriate for an 18 year old.
I'll think a bit about places to look for a male comedic monologue... unfortunately, most of the men I've worked with have gravitated towards dramatic ones recently.

how about something by brian friel? maybe something from "freedom of the city" it is set in my town so it would be very easy to get into and is also in my own accent. its also a comedy...

Sounds good. I still struggle to find quality comedic monologues but go for it.
