Auditioning with Accent?Hi All,I'm auditioning shortly for the show, and am interested in playing Meg. We were given monologues from the show to audition with, and I'm trying to decide whether to do it with an accent or not. Of course, I would ideally want to do it with an accent, but I don't want to fudge the accent too badly. Would it be standard to audition with an accent? Any suggestions as to how I might achieve the accent? |

I would say prepare it with and without an accent, and when you go in ask whether the director wants to hear it with an accent or not. | ||

Audition with the accent. Brigadoon requires and accent and it must be done at the audition so the director knows if you can work into one.
I bought a scottish dialect tape when i did Brigadoon. it worked immensley. |

If you can do it right, go with the accent.
If not, don't sweat it. Do it without. When you get the part, the director can work with you. |

Sources for Scottish AccentIf you are trying to work on the Scots accent, there are a few very good sources. You can listen to Scottish speakers at the International Dialects of English Archive: http://web.ku.edu/idea/ If you're looking for something that actually teaches the accent, check out http://www.accenthelp.com --There you'll find downloads that teach you how to speak with the accent and there are recordings of native Scots included. You can also order a Scottish dialect CD from http://www.dialectresource.com which will include instruction and examples. (Full disclosure: I'm a dialect coach and contributor to both IDEA and AccentHelp.) Usually it is very hard to audition properly for a show that requires a dialect without actually doing the dialect. Being able to do the accent will always put you a step above anyone who is not able to pull it off. Good luck! |
