Auditioning stress.

Hello all! I just made my account and am very new here, and I'm also a total newbie at musical theatre! Yep!

Everyone here seems very wise in the ways of musical theatre, so I need some advice:

In about two weeks, auditions will be held for Beauty and the Beast at the Fin Arts Center in my city. I am really pumped about hopefully getting a role, any role, but I have never auditioned for any musical. I am not a trained singer, and have only taken a few dance classes.
So, for the past month or so, I've been preparing to go try-out. I've come up with the song "On the Steps of the Palace" from Into the Woods as my audition song. (I thought it was sorta clever, what with the whole cinderella princess thing... *cough*...yeah.. >.>)
Anyway, the info on what to prepare is to sing a song in the style of the show. I have no idea if On the Steps is anywhere near the style or if I'd just look like a total fool onstage.

Yes, so in a very roundabout way, what should I do?? Should I keep the song or go for something more disney?

I think "On the Steps..." is actually a good choice. Although, considering you're new to theatre it may not be too smart to choose anything Sondheim. Have you looked into anything by Menken?
Chele-ino

No, I haven't. Does he have anything that's easier?
SuperKabob

Menken did a lot of the disney movies, so you can look through that stuff.

Wow, thank you guys for pointing him out. Smile

How about "Part of Your World" from The Little Mermaid? It's Disney, at least.

Most overdone song for Belle.

On the Steps of the Palace...for being new to theatre, I'm surprised you know that song. I wouldn't recommend Sondheim for BATB, but definately look into Menken.

What about God Help the Outcasts from The Hunchback of Notre Dame?
Chele-ino

Yeah, I'm thinking Part of Your World will be done a bunch, especially with the show on broadway. Thanks anyway!

Converse, I'm actually a newbie at performing in musical theatre. I'm familiar with quite a few shows, and have done a bit of non-musical theatre. My family are pretty much all actors, so I've grown up around the stuff, just haven't taken interest until a few years ago. Very Happy
I'm sorta thinking God Help the Outcasts is a bit slow for what I'm trying out for. I would definitely consider it if I was going for Belle, though. Thank you for suggesting it and giving the advice!
ConverseSneaker

Ah, I get it now. Very Happy

Your welcome for the advice! You didn't specify any particular character you were interested in, but I thought it had a nice feel for BATB, with Belle and the Beast both being outcasts in thier own little way.

No, seriously. I personally think it's a great song for Belle and it's reminiscent of both of the big ballads she sings (Home and A Change in Me), not to mention it shows a great range ^_^ And I think Jo and Belle are similar enough that it works... but that's just me.
me-shellmybelle

I second Astonishing. Ive also always thought that Jo and Belle were very much alike and its a really cool song.

Well, first of all, I'd like to say that this is one of the most fabulous shows I've ever been apart of...so I'm very happy that you're deciding to do it! I agree with the previous posts that a song by Menken would probably be your best bet song-wise. Being a newbie to musical theater can be a little overwhelming, but just have fun. Are you trying out for a specific role?

Because I change it under the "font size" option to small.

But I can make it normal size too! Smile

I'm auditioning for beauty and the beast in a few weeks and they gave us the option to either sing something from the show or soething form another production...I was thinking about just singing the second part of Home...but IDK.. I didnt want to come across as "precasting" myself as Belle....cause I'm not.....I just think it would show my range well and thats what they wanted us to do.
Does anyone think its a good idea to sing that or not??
