Auditioning For Sussical -SONG AND MONOLOGUE HELP!!!Hi all!
First of all, im new here and am very happy to have found this INCREDIBLE site!
I'm auditioning for an amature production of Seussical (its a really well known amature theatre company putting it on... so im very nervous about this audition) and i was wondering if you could help me pick a song!
I have the right vocal range for:
The Cat in the Hat (The part that I'm really aiming for!)
Mayze
Gertrude McFuzz
So far I've thought of maybe performing a song from The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (perhaps I Speak Six Languages or Woe Is Me), but I'm afraid that it's too obvious! Then I thought of You're a Good Man Charlie Brown (My New Philosophy or Little Known Facts), but I'm not sure!!!
Also, its been said that we must present a monologue or a rhyme prose thing.... anything you can reccomend?... The monologue has to be a caricatured and out there!
Hope you guys can help me out!!! I'm desprate!!!
Much love
Nicole.

I think a great audition song for Seussical would be "Here I Am" from Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. It's upbeat and fun to perform.
Monologue, hmm. How about this one from YAGMCB? I know I just said (on some other post, like, yesterday) that you shouldn't do monologues from musicals, but this one is perfect and doesn't need to be too in-depth for Seussical.
Sally - You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown
A 'C'? A 'C'? I got a 'C' on my coathanger sculpture? How could anyone get a 'C' in coathanger sculpture? May I ask a question? Was I judged on the piece of sculpture itself? If so, is it not true that time alone can judge a work of art? Or was I judged on my talent? If so, is it fair that I be judged on a part of my life over which I have no control? If I was judged on my effort, then I was judged unfairly, for I tried as hard as I could! Was I judged on what I had learned about this project? If so, then were not you, my teacher, also being judged on your ability to transmit your knowledge to me? Are you willing to share my 'C'? Perhaps I was being judged on the quality of coathanger itself out of which my creation was made...now is this not also unfair? Am I to be judged by the quality of coat hangers that are used by the dry-cleaning establishment that returns our garments? Is that not the responsibility of my parents? Should they not share my 'C'?

Thank you for the monologue - i think its perfect!
Thing is - they want a monologue that's "preferably in rhyme" (arg!) So im not quite sure what to do! ideas/ suggestions? should i even concider a Dr. Seuss monologue? (as in, a short rhyme?...) or is it too... you know... blah.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels! didn't think of it!!! brilliant!
Thanks Heaps!
Much love
Nicole.

Oh please oh please oh please dont do the monologue from YAGMCB!!
That is one of the most overdone monologues--at every single audition I go to, at least 2 or 3 people do that one, and the auditioners just roll their eyes---find something on monologuesearch.com---go to the advanced search option and you can find one suitable for your age that is comedic!

Yes, the monologues and songs you mention are suitable but very obvious choices.
The character of the cat in the hat sings very ragtime style music, so why not check out Ragtime, another musical that Ahrens & Flaherty wrote to see what you can find that is similar to Seussical's musical style.
Also "On the other side of the tracks" from Little Me covers quite a few bases.
"Nobody is chasing me" from Out of this world is a good comedy number.
"Animal crackers in my soup" and "What's new at the zoo" are also in the spirit of the piece
"I want to be bad" from Good news.
"He's here now" from How now dow Jones

Monologues in rhyme that mayn be suitable:
"Good evening, Mrs. Audience,
And Mr. Audience, too;
I hope you're glad to see me,
And will like me 'fore I'm through.
I'm here to bid you welcome,
I'm sure I like your style;
We'll soon become right friendly
If you will only smile.
I'll try to entertain you
With monologue and rhyme--
But if you won't assist me
We'll have a dreadful time.
The world is full of worry,
Let's forget it for a while,
And take a trip to Funland--
So stretch your mouth and smile.
Some speakers talk of trouble,
Of pessimistic creeds,
But just an S-M-I-L-E [spell]
Is all the old world needs.
Be gay, enthusiastic,
And cheerful all the while,
Forget your gloom and worries,
And smile, smile, smile!
And now the ice is broken,
We're friends, that's how it stands,
And if you feel as I do,
You'll tell me with your hands, [Pantomimes applause]
With song and jest and story,
I shall an hour beguile;
I'll do my best to please you,
If you'll smile, smile, smile!"

Also, JIJane, I'm really intersted in looking into the songs that you have suggested... would it be easy to find the sheet music?... ( i know Ragtime would be... but the the other songs that you mentioned! ) and thank you for replying! i really do want to do this show! (i just finished a play, and have no idea what to do with my life... haha! post production blues you see... can't wait to get back into it!)

Yes, all the sheet music should be available on internet sites such as ww.musicnotes.com and compilation songbooks, many of which are in public libraries. The monologues is from Readings and Monologues À La Mode. Walter Ben Hare. Minneapolis: T.S. Denison & Co., 1921.
