Auditioning for Into the Woods

I'm auditioning for into the woods and i'm not sure what part to go for. My voice teacher gave me the song A Lovely Night from Cinderella. I'm 15 about 5'4 and mezzo soprano. Any advice on my audition song or what part i should go out for??

What is this for? What is the age range of the other actors in the show?

I think the song that she chose for you ("A Lovely Night") would be a perfect audition for The Bakers Wife or Rapunzel. If this is a youth theatre (which I imagine it is), I would go for either of those roles. If this is an all ages (adult and kids) theatre, I would go for Rapunzel although it'd probably go to someone 18-21 years old.

yea, it's a teens theater. it's for my camp.

You could probably pull off any role. It depends how young or short the other girls are. If you have shorter girls or younger girls, stay away from Little Red.

I would say try for The Witch or The Baker's Wife because they are mezzo sopranos.

I believe that Cinderella and Rapunzel are Sopranos. But they are great characters as well.

This play is so amazing because all of the characters are so much fun to play! Break a Leg!

Oooh... didn't notice that you were a mezzo. Can you hit the high notes in "A Lovely Night"? Perhaps it won't work out as well as I thought?

It doesn't go up that high...it only goes up to a middle C at its highest point...

The funny thing is that the witch and baker's wife's highest notes are F5 and cinderella's highest is an F#5. So they have essentially the same range, but very different sounds. From my research, I've learned that the legit soprano (but not operatic) is cast for Cinderella, the alto with a nice chest mix and high extension is Baker's Wife, and the belter is the Witch. I'm not sure I agree with the Witch being only a belting role, yes she has to belt but she cant' belt 'Stay With Me,' in my opinion.

Anyway, I'm auditioning for this in the fall, also. I can't decide which part to audition for cuz that will decide what kind of song I sing. It's at the university level so, since we're all close to the same age, a woman that looks older will probably play the witch. I don't look old. So I should probably shoot for Cinderella or Baker's Wife... oh I don't know... decisions, decisions...

A Lovely Night doesn't go up that high. I can reach higher notes. I'm more of a soprano than alto, but i'm a good belter. I was considering either Cinderella or the Baker's Wife because there are girls who look younger than me who most likely would be cast as Little Red.

REally? I was just listeing to the Julie Andrews version and it sounded rather high... but then again I know nothing about the female range. What MaryMag said was very interesting. You know what I always say? Shoot for the gold!

The Witch is definitely more of a belting role, though. I wouldn't belt all of "Stay With Me," either, but there are definitely phrases in that song that call for belting. ("Who out there could love you more than I? What out there that I could not supply?") And "Last Midnight" absolutely has to be belted.

Trust me...I own the score! LOL!

But Julie does have a knack for making the middle range sound higher and richer than it really is, so I can see where the confusion would lie! God, I love her voice back in its hay-day!

She does seem to make her middle range sound higher! I have no idea how to explain this, but this is something I've noticed in other singers - women with sweet, bright, lyric voices tend to make their middle notes sound higher. Women with dark, rich voices could be singing the same notes and they would sound lower, I think! Or perhaps this is just me, since the lyric sopranos' E5s or F5s tend to sound as high as my C6s! (I am a Wagnerian/dramatic soprano.)

Hm... then I guess that's what she's doing... I love Julie ANdrews... oh, well... sing it like her then.
