Auditioning for fiddler and need help!Hi! I am auditioning for fiddler in a few weeks. I don't know what part to go for? I am actually jewish and I have brown curly hair, so I know I fit the show well lol I also have been singing for a long time, and my range is anywhere from a low G to a high G... so what part should I go for? Hodel? Is she one of the leads? I should also mention I am 19 going on 20 but I look young... also what song should I sing for it? I was thinking kind of woman from Pippin...any suggestions?

Here is a breakdown of the three daughters:
Chava: Around 15. It dosen't really matter what voice part. She dosen't have any big solos like the other daughters. A large part, but the smallest of the three daughters. She wants to marry Fyedka, a Christian Russian soldier, and her father disowns her because of it. The most emotional character. Should be able to cry on stage.
Hodel: Around 16-18. She sings "Far from the home I love" as her big song. Ours was a mezzo, and she sounded perfect. She is the middle daughter, and wants to marry Perchick, the visiting scholar. Eventually he gets arrested in Syberia and she goes after him. (Hence "Far from the home I love)
Tzeitel: The oldest daughter. In the script one of her lines is "But Mama, I'm not 20 years old yet..." so she is about 19. She is the first daughter to break tradition and not be married by the matchmaker. Our Tzeital was an alto, and since her only song is "Matchmaker, Matchmaker" which she dosen't sing all of anyway, it was fine.
The only daughter that really has to be a good singer is Hodel. Fiddler is more of a show for actors who can sing as opposed to singers who can act.
Tzeitel is more your age range, and it really dosen't matter what her vocal range is, plus she is the very first daughter to break tradition. Go for it!
Listen to "Far from the Home I love". It's usually sung by a mezzo or second soprano. If you can sing it fine, go for Hodel. I'm sure you could pass for 17.
But if you look young like you said, Hodel and Chava might be your best chances. How young exactly? Can we see a picture to better judge?
But like I said, Fiddler is more about acting than dancing or singing. So if you've got the acting chops, I'd say you have a pretty big shot at any of the daughters!
Break a leg!

I'm so glad you posted this! I have a Fiddler audition coming up too, and I'm not sure what to go for. I've seen the show before, but it was a while ago soo I don't remember the parts exactly. I've read character descriptions so I know all that, but I was looking for some personal feedback. It's for an all-ages community theatre. I'm 17, blonde hair, about 5'5''/5'6'', and I'm a mezzo. I've played Sandy, Queen Aggravain, and I am currently cast as Belle. What do you think? I'm guessing either Chava or Hodel but I really don't know. ...........Also, audition song suggestions would be helpful. I'm not positive if I am going to audition for this either; I might audition for High School Musical, because I think I would be a perfect Sharpay. Don't kill me.

everyone in the show is jewish except for the constable and fyedka!
and actually, a lot of russians DO have pale skin and light hair.
and even if they didn't, what does it matter? Women back in those days wore shawls covering most of their hair anyway, and there is always hair dye.

plus, in the show i was in, (community theatre)
tzeitel and golde were both blonde. Well golde it didn't matter cuz her head was completely covered, but all the daughters had a little showing since they were still considered "girls"

When I was in Fiddler, Hodel and Chava AND Golde were all blonde. Don't worry about the hair color, if they have a big problem with it, they'll put you in a wig. If you want a good singing role, definetly go for Hodel. Other than that, I would say go for Chava because Tzeitel (to me) is pretty boring.
Maybe something from The Secret Garden? "It Might as Well Be Spring" from State Fair would probably work, too.

I just edited this because I realized most of what I said had already been said after reading back haha.
Basically from the productions I've seen:
Chava- (usually 15-19) heavy acting role but also sings well, dancing ballet is a plus. I've seen her played as a red-head often. Pretty much any vocal range, but I'd guess a mezzo.
Hodel- (usually 17-23) biggest singing role, but must act well as well. Usually a mezzo or soprano.
Tzeital- (usually 19-26) most humorous. warm big-sisterly. must sing well also. most of the time is an alto.
And I second what was said about there being fair haired russian jews. It's true usually in very large families there were one or mayyybe even two lighter haired children.
