Audition... what to sing?

This is my first post here. I'm thinking of auditioning for Anything Goes. The auditions are in a few months so I've got plenty of time to plan. I was thinking of auditioning for Bonnie.

I'm thinking about using the song "Adelaide's Lament" from Guys and Dolls. It's one of my favorite songs to sing but I'm wondering if it's overdone or if it will work well for this part. The reasons I'm thinking of using this song are for the accent, high/nasal voice, and the comedic acting skills.

That brings me to another question.... should Bonnie's voice be high?

Any help is very much appreciated!

I should add that this is for a community theatre.

And should this post be in the Audition forum, under the "Audition song thread" sticky.

Sorry... I'm knew to this forum!

hmmmm, first, i think that "adelaide's lament" is, unfortunately, slightly overdone. however, if the theatre you are auditioning for hasn't done it within the last 10 years or so (yea, songs do stick with directors for that long!) then, it probably wouldn't be that bad to sing. I would just advise you NOT to do it with a heavy accent or nasaly tone. that will throw the director off and have them paying attention to your accent/tone, rather than your voice.

I don't think Bonnie's voice has to be necessarily high, either. the gal in our show did have a beautiful soprano, but never used it in the role. she sang gutsy and mezzo/belt-ish (if that's even a word!).

I congratulate you on going for a fun and great role! Bonnie will be a boat-load (haha, some dry Anything Goes humor for ya!) of fun to play! Smile

Good luck! (by the way, you CAN also post this in the audition forum if you want a quicker answer)

"Adelaide..." is an extremely overdone song, unfortunately. For Bonnie it does fit, but you might want to think of something slightly less mainstream. The best audition song is one that makes the director sit up and notice the song so they listen to you better and remember you. One of the more upbeat songs from "Crazy for You" would probably be an okay choice, "I Got Rhythm" could potentially be very Bonnie-ish.

Our Bonnie was a mezzo-alto and she did a fabulous job, high notes are not necessary.

Thanks for your advice!

Now I'm wondering how to read for this part? When I asked about her "high voice" I actually meant her speaking voice. I am picturing something high pitched. Does she have an accent or do you think this depends more on the director?
