Audition songs for Tommy

My daughter's theatre group has just been told that they've got the rights to perform Tommy. They're going to perform it at their own theatre and then apparently hope to take it to the Edinburgh Festival.

My daughter is 12 and isn't really old enough to play Mrs Walker or The Acid Queen and is too tall to play the girl who gets kicked in the face by Oliver Reed (I don't know if that sequence is in the stage show). I cannot think of any other female parts.

So, what should she audition for?

What would be good songs to use for an audition for Tommy?

Let's see... If she isn't old enough to play Mrs. Walker or Acid Queen, she might try for Sally Simpson, since she is the third leading lady. In the stage show she is meant to be early twenties but in the film she was a young girl. Anyway, seeing as it is a school production, that doesn't really matter. She's a soprano and sings in 'Sally Simpson' and 'Sally's Question' .

I'm afraid I can't really help you with the audition song... Something upbeat, rock, soprano.

Other females with solo lines are the two nurses in 'It's a boy' and the one nurse in 'Go to the mirror'

The others are ensemble members.

She didn't get anything. The director was charging £5.00 per person to audition to 'cover costs' but I think being that my daughter (and a lot of her group aged 11-14) have lost £5.00 and gained an audition experience. Read into that what you will. Rolling Eyes

That's pathetic... At least when you're asking for payment give people the certainty and assurance that they will be cast. Sheez. That's lame. Worst director ever.

'And the worst director award goes to...'

She is actually a very good director, but she's also a money-grabber, bless her. She's also a personal friend of mine but I don't discuss business with her!

Paying for going on auditions? That's freakin crazy!

Oh well, at least your daughter tried, right? That's the best she can do... maybe next time the show comes around, she'll get a different director.
