Audition Song Help for Sweeney Todd

Hello, my community theater is putting on the show Sweeney Todd and I am really hoping to get in it, thoughmost likely as a chorus member since I don't really fit the characters well. I need a really good song since they tend to pick the same people consistently for their shows with a few newbie breakthroughs here and there. I am comfortably a mezzo-soprano who can also hit notes that are quite high....

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

what about the crazy woman? she's a mezzo

if youre just going for chorus then pick a piece that best shows off you and your talents......I dont worry too much about trying to pick a song to fit a certain character, thats what callbacks are for
DramaFreek

the crazy women is my favorite character from Sweeney Todd, and she would be SOOOO fun.

if you're a mezzo definatly go with that.

Believe me I would love to play her but considering my age and the way they usually pick main parts at this theater I think it is unlikely. I just want some ideas of songs for this musical since I really don't know what direction to go in with it...
I have one song that is very operetic which I am considering but I'd have to cut it down and I'm not sure its the right thing. Just any song ideas or similar musicals etc. would be helpful.

I cant think of any specific songs off the top of my head but def. go with something non-belt-ed, I dont remember anyone belting in that show....maybe something Weill since some of his shows are a bit...well "odd" i guess
Rumpleteaze

What about something that just shows off your range a ballad-y sort of piece?

and always remember to check the Audition Song Sticky Thread at the top Very Happy

go with the very soprano-y song if you are going for chorus. there are some VERRY high notes in that show. Do NOT Belt. Not belting at all.

if you decide to go for the Begger Woman, Go for Something very Character-y.
Perfect- Gooch's Song from Mame. Play it very eccentric and charactery adn crazed and preggers!

hOPE THIS HELPS.

Thanks a lot for the advice, I'm thinking about doing the song The Black Swan from The Medium. Any thoughts?
pinkstiletto510

that would actually be a really good piece! I've never thought about using Menotti stuff because it's def. considered opera but Sweeney is so close to opera that it would work really well

Very Happy I've wanted to use that piece for an audition but could never find the right one. Thanks for all your help!

Audition Song Help for Sweeny

Good luck at the audition..I think your song will work perfectly Very Happy .It will also probably be unique..which is a good thing! i'm so jealous..I would love for a company to do something really eccentric like Sweeny! The theaters near me are all doing fun comedies and the classics at the moment.
DramaFreek

yeah i know what you mean, but i live like two miles from broadway so we cant do ANYTHING. i want to do Wicked, Beauty and Beast, Sweeney, Spamalot, Phantom, Chicago, and we can't Sad we've done forum, charlie brown, OUAM, Annie, all those shows.

i think your song is perfect. i love operetic songs, good luck

Hello all. Just giving a little update and thank you for the help and comments. Audition is tonight and I've stuck with The Black Swan, I was panicing because I had a sore throat but I can sing fine now thanks to lots of green tea and a never ending supply of Ricola throat drops. Smile Wish me luck!

Sorry, I know you'll have already auditioned by the time you read this, but I just wanted to tell you that I absolutley ADORE 'The Black Swan'...I sang it for State Solo & Ensemble last year and got 1's for every round with it...it is such a beautiful song, I hope you do wonderfully!!

Good luck!

let us know what happens..I hope your audition went well Very Happy and I hope your throat is better..my voice just went out too..luckily my next audition is the 30th..so it should be better by then..i hate having a sore throat..especially when you can't practice for an audition.

GOOD LUCK

I have to say I'm disappointed Sad . I thought I was doing well in the audition, no voice cracking or wrong pitches or anything like that and the scales went well but at the end they said something along the lines of "You know you don't have to be so nervous, we're not going to yell next at you" ..........So I wasn't too suprised to find out that I didn't get in the show. But this has now started paranoia which is not healthy for me. I'm now worried that the only reason I haven't been getting in any shows is my nerves. They don't start up until right when I open my mouth to sing and its only for auditions not the actual shows. Sad
Well, thank you for all the input. Applause
wish i would have made it, but they'll be more auditions soon.
