Audition Song for Riff/Action/A-Rab/etc.

Hey guys--

My school will be presenting 'West Side' in honor of the its 50th Anniversary, as I'm sure you are all well aware. I am very familiar with the show, having been involved in a local production a few years ago (I played Big Deal and understudied Tony and Riff). I auditioned with "Cool" the first time around, it being both a fairly simple and straightforward song choice.

I'm hoping to be typed as one of the Jets again (I'm looking to pursue the roles of Riff, Action, A-Rab, and possibly Diesel, specifically). The faculty have asked that students prepare a song from the "legitimate musical theater repertoire (no pop/rock) that features legato, lyrical, challenging singing (eg: 'Candide,' 'West Side Story,' 'Man of La Mancha,' 'Brigadoon,' '1776,' '110 in the Shade,' 'A Little Night Music,' ' Sweeney Todd,' 'Passion,' etc."). I don't see myself as being a candidate for Tony, so I'm not about to march into my audition with a ballad. I suppose I could sing a cut from "Cool" or "The Jet Song," but I was hoping to be a little less predictable. I'm looking for something uptempo/jazzy and still moderately legit. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Sorry to ramble and thanks in advance!!

Perhaps post this in the audition song thread in the auditions forum. There's lots of folks that can help you there!

I don't know guys rep AT ALL - but I'm happy that your audition notice mentioned showing off your legato lines. I think that's one of the largest shortcomings of our Tony... but if you're not going for Tony, I suppose Riff or Action doesn't need to have legato lines quite like Tony...

anyway, put your Q in the thread I suggested. JIJane will probably be a huge help to you!
