There's a local production of this coming up in the Spring that I'm pretty sure I'm going to come out for. I like to prepare well in advance.

I'm a pretty experienced singer (if out of practice) but musicals are still more or less uncharted territory for me. I'm a bass, but I have a pretty solid range (up to F above middle C) -- my tessitura's definitely low, though. I'll be auditioning for Jud with Ali as a 2nd choice.

Any suggestions for songs? It's rough, because one of the few bass MT audition songs that's always bandied about is "Lonely Room." I did have one audition a few months ago and carried off "My Friends" from Sweeney Todd pretty well, but I'm told that Sondheim is generally discouraged (in that case, I chose it off a list of suggestions).

Sondheim is usually not encouraged because some accompanists might not be able to play music as complicated as Sondheim.

It'll be hard to go for Jud with Ali as a second choice, since they're two very different parts. If you sing a dark, emotional song for Jud, it's very hard to come off as comic for Ali.

Look at some stuff from Chess, maybe even the beginning of "Music of the Night" from Phantom.
