Audition song for baritone?Hi there,
I'm auditioning for my college production of Godspell on Thursday, but am having trouble coming up with a suitable song. I'm 24 years old, baritone voice, don't have my heart set on any particular role would just like to be cast as something. We only get to do one song and I'm not sure if I should pick an up-tempo number or a ballad. Any suggestions?

Im a Baritone too
The only real baritone part is John the Baptist and the small part herb, However if as a baritone you have quite a high range ( f or G) then you may be able to pull of Jesus or Jeoffry.
If you wish to do a song from Godspell either try Save the people or All for the best. If you are wishing to do a song from somthing else you may wish to choose somthing from RENT the Musical (somthing like the bit which mark sings at the bigging of LA VIE BOHEME).

^Yup. I'm a baritone, and I was able to play Jesus. But for that role, one must be comfortable in a slightly higher tessitura. Lots of Es and Ds. Jeffrey isn't as demanding, but you need that falsetto D.
As far as an audition song, if you can find a song with a folky-poppish-rockish feel from the 60s or 70s, that would be ideal.
As an example, "Corner of the Sky" from Pippin is very similar to "Save the People" (and it's Stephen Schwartz), and could be suitable.
But if you can't sing that high easily, you're better going for JtB/Judas or Herb. For JtB/Judas, I think a song that is either slightly rabble-rousing or a song that's cynical would work respectively for the two aspects of the role. I happen to think Herb's the least interesting character in the show part...no substantial solo singing, and his lines as written make him out to be a stereotypical horndog. And Schwartz' notes on the character even say it should be a comedian rather than a singer. But ensemble shows usually have their minor minor characters.
