Audition help!!

I'm auditiong for the part of Kim in Bye Bye Birdie soon. I was told by my director that I definately have the vocal and dance ability for the part, so i definately don't want to blow this. i know that the vannessa williams/jason alexander movie version is closer to the staged script but i have a quesiton. i have a very classical and sometimes operaettic (sp??) voice esp when i get nervous. should i train my voice to sound more teen-like? i don't want to sound too poppy though

I've been auditioning for Bye Bye Birdie for the past two days at a local production of it. After hearing the auditions, I wouldn't worry about teen-like of it. Just be yourself, the director will adjust you - if he would want you to change.

You can't sing the high Ab's in 'One Boy' in a harsh teen voice anyway (please don't, anyway!!!!). Smile

Our Kim had a very trained voice much like how I assume yours is. She tried to make herself sound "girly", but it ended up sounding nasally and she was often too quiet to hear. Just sing as you do normally.

The Kim we had for our performance had a very pop-princessy voice, but, being a classical singer myself, I'd love to hear a legit singer do it. I've found a lot of resistence with directors that feel I'm too classical, but I disagree with the idea of making a voice intentionally "bad" or harsh to get a role. You could always try brightening your tone by bringing it farther forward, as well as using younger gestures and expressions to add youth to your performance. However, never go beyond your comfort zone and strain your voice. When in doubt, go a little more classical, and show off your potential. Good luck with the auditions! Remember to stay relaxed and enjoy yourself.
