Audition Help - Freddie...Hey Guys,
I'm auditioning for a local (read: community theater) production of Chess in a few weeks and I have no idea what to sing. Ideally, I'd like to go after Freddie, but I'm not a hundred percent confident in my "Pity The Child" (I can hit the high notes by shifting into a head voice around the b-flat. It's solid, but the change is noticeable in my opinion). My feeling is if you're going for Freddie, you probably need to be singing that song or, at worst, something else that showcases your uppermost range.
They only want 12-bars, but it needs to be musical theater. I was thinking perhaps something from Tommy or Jesus Christ Superstar, but I'm mostly just driving myself crazy overthinking the whole thing. Any thoughts? Do I go after the highest song I can find or should I just find a piece I'm comfortable with, even if it only goes up to a G? Also, if anyone has advice on specific songs, I'm listening.
Thanks in advance!

I would recommend using a very strong rock song, not a very high one, but a difficult one -- "Pinball Wizard" would probably fit the bill, and Tommy hasn't quite been overplayed at auditions as JCS numbers (or Chess numbers, for that matter).

I'd just sing Pity the child. There are very few songs in musical theatre ( or opera, or rock, or anywhere ) that are as hard to sing.
Pour mon ame from Donizettis La Fille de Regiment is reckoned to be the Mount Everest for operatic tenors with it's 9 high C's. That's easier to sing than pity.

I hope that you sang Pity the Child as that's what they'll want to hear. You need to be able to sing the song but if the high notes are not perfect, beautifully hit notes no one is going to care because it's very much a rock tenor role so IMO, the rawer the better.
I hope you went for it and got it.
