Audition help: Aida, Guys and Dolls, and Pirates of PenzanceI'm auditioning for all 3 of these soon.
The problem is, for the Aida and Guys and Dolls audition, I only get to sing one song. It's for community theatre, they have you sing one song and both directors hear you at once. Kinda hard to get your audition towards two real different shows, but they just want to see your range. Problem is, I have a weak chest voice and can't switch between the two very easily. Since Guys and Dolls is my style of music (I'm the old-broadway soprano type) I was thinking I'd just sing something that makes me sound good instead of try to get into Aida. Anyway, I have a limited number of songs in my repertoire and want to use something I already know.
My options are:
"You'll Never Walk Alone" - Carousel
"What I Did For Love" - A Chorus Line
Maybe "Bring Him Home" or "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Mis (I know, that's supposed to be taboo, but here, it truly doesn't matter.)
"God Help the Outcasts" - Hunchback of Notre Dame
"Far From the Home I Love" - Fiddler on the Roof
As for Pirates of Penzance, same songs. Probably going to go with "You'll Never Walk Alone" or "Bring Him Home" because those are the two songs I have that go the highest. Although, still not as high as I can sing, but I have nothing truly from an opera.
Your thoughts?

Chorus line, Fiddler, and Les Mis...I know you say it's ok...But those truly are the most overdone shows at auditions. If you wanna do something soprano-ey...Hmmmm...The Carousel one could work...You could do If I Loved You from Carousel also.
For Pirates, I don't know your range but Glitter and be Gay from Candide would be a fantastic audition peice for that. You'll definately want something more from a light opera for that. Maybe some other Gilbert and Sullivan. Besides Glitter and be Gay (which isn't G&S), maybe The Moon and I from the Mikado?? The Moon and I is veeeery easy to learn...Glitter and be Gay....isn't. . Hope that helped a little!!!

Of the ones you know, if you're going for Guys and dolls or more specifically Sarah, I would do... hmm... I guess "You'll never walk alone", but still, it isn't really the 'young' soprano type that Sarah is.
Do you know "In My Life" from Les Mis? That might be more appropriate. (the part that Cosette sings)
IF you have time to learn a new song, I HIGHLY recommend "What Good Would the Moon Be?" from Street Scene. It's very musical theater-like, even though it came from an operetta/musical crossover. You could go either way on the style. But it has a wide range, nice melody (music by Kurt Weill), shouldn't be TOO hard to learn, esp. if you can find a recording. Goes to a high G.
