Audition for Singing in the Rain

So at the end of September I am auditioning for a huge production of Singing in the Rain. The people who judge our auditions are very picky about songs. The closer you have style wise to the show we are doing the better chance you have of getting a lead. We did Me & My Girl last year and one of my friends sang I'm Getting Married In the Morning, a cockney song obviously, and he ended up getting a lead although he was no better than any of the guys there. Anyways I'm looking for an audition piece, a song very similar to the stuff in Singing in the Rain. I'm a guy so it needs to be a male song. If anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate it! Also I'm looking for a comic male monologue. Something that can show diversity. Again if anyone has suggestions I would very much appreciate it!!!

I did Singin' in the Rain last year so I can help you with anything you need. Our Director does our auditions really different from how it's usually done so I couldn't help you with that but I'd be glad to help in any other ways. It's a fun and wonderful show to be a part of! Good luck and enjoy! Very Happy

why thank you! now i just need to find a good audition piece. :/ hmm..
WickedToo

You're welcome. Very Happy
What role do you think you'll be trying out for? Can you sing a piece from the actual show?

well you don't audition for any certain role at this theater. i will take whatever i can get though. haha. & nope we have to sing something that is not from the show. so i want something as similar to singing in the rain as possible. Wink

Well personally for you, you should have a role that you're trying to get. It very vague and dumb of a person to just go to an audition to sing and see what happens. They have to have a role that they would like to play and base everything else on what role they are trying to achieve. Having a role picked out for yourself gives you direction in your audition and how you prepare for it.

What's your previous experiences with musical theatre?

Have you researched the roles of Singin' in the Rain?

When is your audition date?

I'll do the best I can to help you even though I don't have much experience in musical theatre or with giving advice on auditions.

I would agree that selecting the role you want is key to choosing your song. Don and Cosmo have different characteristic numbers. Or if you can't tap dance, then go for Beautiful Girl tenor.

well they don't judge you on your tapping abilities. it's your performing abilities that get you a part in this theater. so i guess i am auditiong for don. so what would be a good song selection? i was thinking i believe in you from how to succeed in business maybe? it has a similar style and i could easily act it out.. any opinions/other ideas?

as for my theater experience: i played bun foo in my high schools production of thoroughly modern millie, judd fry in oklahoma, and ugly (the lead role) in honk! (it's a british musical.. not too many people have heard of it)

I totally agree with Celeste_SM. If you can't tap dance, then you shouldn't audition for Don Lockwood or Cosmo Brown. Tap dancing is the main part of the show. The score is actually made with long instrumental sections specifically for the purpose of tap dancing. Singin' in the Rain wouldn't be Singin' in the Rain without tap dancing.

i don't think you quite understand... see these auditions.. you go in and you don't say what you are auditioning for or anything of that type. you go in, sing a song and do a monologue.. you then go into a dance audition (I can dance.. i'm actually dance captain for my high school show choir).. then they judge you and you are sent home.. the judges care about potential NOT what you can do. we did me and my girl last year and a guy who had never tapped in his life got the lead.. and there is a tap number ON TABLES.. it's just how it works. they have professional choreographers to teach you the stuff.... so what i want is a monologue and a song that resemble something of don lockwoods..

Okay. Thanks for clarifying. I'll keep looking for a song that would fit the role.
I wish my Director was like that. Not all auditions are like what you describe. I would have gotten Captain Von Trapp for sure if your Director cast our Sound of Music production.

yeah.. i guess everyone is quite lucky that's how ours is done... so i did some research and i found a song from gypsy called all i need is the girl.. i'm thinking about using that.. and a monologue from you're a good man charlie brown..

Good song choice. I think that'll work. Good luck on your audition! Very Happy When is it?
