Audition experience/Questions

Last week i went to a call for WSS.

Went in, sang 32 bars uptempo, learned a pretty easy dance combo which was probably the equivalent of 3 bars of 8 to a part of the overture. Was called back in to sing part of 'cool'

Callback this Thursday for 'Riff'. Was told to prepare all of 'cool', the first part of 'when you're a jet', and to expect more dance/cold reads.

My age range is probably 18-28, white male, 6'2, baritone (up to G above middle C). I'm a pretty confident mover though no formal dance training.

Thoughts? What does anyone think are good male roles to accept for this?

Honestly, I think any of the Jets are worth accepting (even the "chorus" parts with no lines or solos). They get all the fun numbers/scenes!

Riff, obviously, would be the primo role for you, but I'd say take any part they give you, as long as it's one of the Jets. The Shark guys don't get nearly as much stage time, and don't get to have close to as much fun.

I so wanted to be a Jet when I did this show, but, alas, I'm waaaaay to female. Sad

thanks for the feedback! sorry you couldn't be a jet gal.

I dont think I'd be remotely considered for a shark (very light/Irish complexion).

Actually, I ended up being a Shark Girl, which as far as female ensemble roles go, was a lot more fun. I'd just rather have been one of the Jet guys! I had the same "problem" when I auditioned for "Pirates of Penzance" -- really wanted to be a pirate, but they made me a silly daughter instead. Wink

And don't be so sure about not being considered for a Shark role. Of course, it all depends on the company and what talent they have available. But I'm about as white as white can be (pale skin, blue eyes, red hair), and was still cast as a Shark girl. So you never know ...

Break a leg at the callback!!
